  • Opening Documents In IE Window [KEITH]
-Don't know how this behavior started, but when an end user opened a Word doc, it opened it in IE and launched an empty MS Word (probably as a renderer/decomposer) in the background.

  • How kids use the internet today [RICH]
-So I caught my daughter doing her homework on the internet tonight
-seems innocent enough, except that I noticed she had the majority of answers left
-Basically she was putting the questions into google.
-Don't want to deny her use of the internet but there has to be some material provided by the school

  • Perfmon Counter - Memory\Pages Per Second [STEVE]
-Continuing on with the Perfmon counters, we have another in the Memory namespace - Pages Per Second
-Pages per Second describes the number of times that pages (sections of memory) are read from or written to disk.
-This value should be under 1000, or you might have a memory leak!
  • Outlook problem [KEITH]
-Had a user come back from being out of the office and Outlook 2003 was performing miserably. He was reminded by a co-worker to turn off his "Out-Of-Office" message and he realized he wasn't prompted for that at startup.
-When he tried to launch it from the menu, he got an error about "Command not available".
-Found a quick fix on MS website that just had me rename a reg key and all was back to good.
  • Labor implications of remote access for hourly workers [KEITH]
-Keep in mind, this is my interpretation and I am not a lawyer.
-Response to comment posted on site about why labor laws were a concern when giving remote access to employees.
-This is based on experience and a little research. The US Dept. of Labor and your individual state establishes the guidelines for how employees are to be fairly compensated.
-One component that comes into play is overtime compensation for hourly workers. Most salaried professionals are exempt. Specifically 'Computer Users' which is not the average computer user, but it translates to IT personnel. Some lawyers argue that many IT positions are non-exempt because of the specific job functions. NOTE: All DOL sites (State and Fed) indicate that the exemption is based on job tasks not job title.
-However, generic computer users who are compensated hourly would need to be compensated for any work they do remotely as if it were part of a normal workday. This can mean overtime if they work beyond 8 hours/day in some states (CA I noted) or beyond 40 hours/week for all states.
-That is not to say it can't or shouldn't be done with hourly employees. After-hours work for non-exempt employees should be clearly defined and the compensation for such clearly defined as well. Depending on what kind of after-hours work is needed, it may fall under an on-call compensation package. Again, it just needs to be clearly defined and controlled.
-Control is the last point; In many of my experiences, the manager asked how they can control how many OT hours the employee can rack up. This should be considered as part of that definition of what
-""hours worked" includes all time an employee must be on duty, or on the employer's premises or at any other prescribed place of work"

Listener Feedback

From listener....Martin

Keith,

This may be a mute point, you probably have the neighbor wireless issue resolved. In case you don’t one thought came to mind, does this wireless router have a beacon interval setting? If it does set it to 25ms or less.

This doesn’t only apply when joining a network, it needs to be constantly low enough to keep an active connection. I found this out a hard way thanks to a Fortinet I had to support.

Side note, grats on the upcoming #100!

Useful FireFox? extensions the topic for this week

Foxmarks, or Xmarks as it is now called (http://www.foxmarks.com/) Allows bookmarks and web passwords to be synchronised across computers which is handy if you are working across different machines. There is also a web front end on their website which is mobile aware so that bookmarks can even be available on your iphone/ipod touch. Really handy if you need to access your links from anywhere, as well as ensuring they are backed up on a regular basis.

FireFTP? (http://fireftp.mozdev.org/) Powerful FTP Client within FireFox?. Does all the usual ftp functions as well as drag and drop, directory synchronisation and comparison. Very useful to have for websites.

DownloadThemAll? (http://www.downthemall.net/) Powerful download add-on which appears to split any downloads in 4 and runs them concurrently resulting in a much quicker download. Also caters for resumable downloads etc. Great for large ISOs? or update files if they are not available via torrents.

NoScript? (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722) Sure everyone will have heard about this one but for the security conscious ones among us this allows you to create a white list of domains that you are prepared to let scripting run within your browser, whether it by javascript, java or exes. A bit of a pain to keep on top of but a must have if you are worried about security.
