  • Perfmon Counter - Processor\% Processor Time [STEVE]
-This is the amount of time being spent by a core on a non-idle thread.
-85% useage is the number we want to watch for. Consistent useage above that can indicate that you need a faster processor
-You might think, but I have 7 other cores that are idle... well, there is the rub..
-The problem occurs when the processor needs to move one thread to another core..
-All the processors have to stop, and the processor cache has to be copied over to the new core. This is where the performance penalty is incurred.
-Software and OS's try to accomodate that and you see features like "sticky" processes and processor affinity. Driver vendors often write their drivers to take advantage of the highest numbered processor, accounting for the fact that the lower numbered cores are occupied by more pressing processes.
-This all means we still have to watch for runaway processes and heavily processor intensive apps need fast processors.

  • Perfect Timing [KEITH]
-Going through MS Dynamics GP upgrade to v.10 and the HDD goes and dies in my brand new laptop. I have next day on-site, but for user replaceable parts, they ship.
-So, I ask the guy, why next day on-site when this will work out to 3 business days with the holiday weekend. He asks if I'm unable to change the drive and offers to teach me.

  • Best way to control cyber slacking [RICH]
- Restrict internet access through use of applications and appliances
- Enforce a business conduct policy
- Newer technology?
- But what and who and how? Recently I learned that we used facebook to advertise by creating a facebook page for the business
- Where is the line, how do you draw it and inforce it?

-Stephen Redd released a new version of this a while back, but I finally got the latest code installed in my environment and I really like the updates.
-
  • Vista SP2? final available for download
-That's it. Nothing more to say.

Listener Feedback

From listener....The Link Meister

Getting a bit teechie this week although the following tools still have a place in anyones toolkit, focusing on file editors.

WinMerge? http://winmerge.org

Utility to graphically compare two files or folders with automatic highlights of changes and even merging of differences if you wish. Really useful if you have two configuration text files and you are trying to determine the differences (e.g. cisco running configs)

HxD? Hex Editor http://mh-nexus.de/en/hxd

Freeware hex editor which has a portable version and allows usual search and replace at hex level. Sure everyone has their own preference of utility for this kind of thing although this is purely freeware whereas most others are limited versions of full products.

CSVed? http://csved.sjfrancke.nl/index.html

Just come across this one recently and still wondering of the benefits of this kind of utility over and above the likes of MS Excel for manipulating comma separated value files. However, for someone who deals with CSV files on a regular basis and who needs the power to merge and split columns as well as a host of other modifications it is worth a look.

[KEITH] WinMerge? has a PortableApps? version at PortableApps?.com
