Steve's Topics

  • Fun with Networking
-I've been working on the installation of software to manage the video and audio from our squad cars
-One interesting challenge is that the video system connects to the squad laptop via a RJ45? connection and the software buffers the video locally and uploads it via an 802.11 wireless connection.
-Our VPN solution provides a unique challenge since it monitors all network connections on the system. The recorder interacts via IP with the laptop, so I need to bypass the VPN for that connection. I also want to bypass the VPN for the upload of video, to limit the amount of bandwidth tied up to the VPN Server. It makes for interesting configuration
  • Scripting Games Events Being Announced
-Finally, the Hey, Scripting Guy! is now a real blog, like the other Technet blogs. That means all the Hey, Scripting Guy! articles will be available via RSS.
-The recent entries are regarding the scripting games, which officially start on the 15th. They have been releasing the event details early though, so get a jump on the games and check out the blog.
  • MAP tool
-Microsoft Assesment and Planning toolkit
-Check your network for readiness for Vista/Win7, Office 2007, App-V, Greet IT, Hyper-V, Server 2008, Security, etc..
  • PerfMon? Counter - Processor\% User Time
-Another in the series of Perfmon counters. This counter shows the percentage of processor time being spent on user mode applications.
-How concerned you should be with this depends on the focus of the server or workstation and the scenario.
-Rather than give a hard value to watch for, this is more of an indicator value. If it is high, you know your apps are chewing up a lot of processor time. High for this counter is very relative.
  • Dilema
-I'm currently running Win7 64bit on my desktop at home. I've just found that there are no drivers for my mixer and probably won't be for some time for 64bit OSes?.
-Do I cripple myself and go back to 32bit, where I know it will run?
