  • Ding Dong the Proxy's Dead [KEITH]
-Finally got approval to get rid of our aging proxy server. I didn't want to spend the money on upgrading it or the hardware it rides on until I got a determination.
-Finally got told that it can go away and that we would look into an active system if we ever had a problem.

  • Geeks, Logic, and Superstitions [RICH]
-Conversation between Keith and Rich and the topic of superstitions and myths came up. (e.g. Murphy's Law)
-Being logical geeks, we were talking about why geeks seem to fall prey to these superstitions.
-What is the oddest superstitions or myth that you find yourself
- Greeks believe that Money attracts money, so never leave your pockets, purses or wallets completely empty and never completely empty your
- bank account. Always leave at least a coin or two. It was also considered good luck to give a gift of a wallet or a purse with a coin or
- two in it.
- Penny
- See a penny, pick it up, all day long you'll have good luck!
- See a penny, let it lie, all day long you'll have to cry.
- Star
- It's good luck when you see a falling star. Make a wish on it and it will come true.
- 13 especially Fridy the 13th
- Buzzards and Vultures at a cemetary - just plain bad omen.

[KEITH]

-I have a couple. Two biggest are; Knocking on wood and shoes on a table being bad luck.
-Some I think are just traditions, but their meaning makes you want to follow them. (e.g. Bread, wine, salt, bible for new house)
  • Crystal Reports Export Problem [KEITH]
-Appears to be a problem with CSV export between ver 8.5 and XI. Some note that XI R2 fixes it. Why not a stinkin' patch?
-Traced to Stored Procedure and ran it natively. Record set looks good there. Not sure where blank rows are coming from.

  • Old systems [RICH]
- Been working on trying to understand an old POS system
- Why do people feel they need to continue to use this old of a system?
- WIndows? 95, DOS.
- I find it interesting how it all comes back to slowly.

  • APC - UPS Setup not quite what I hoped for [KEITH]
-Why does PowerChute? Business Edition not communicate directly to the ethernet enable UPS'?
-It can only speak to the devices through a server with the agent that speaks to the device. No problem. USB hub, a couple cables. Boom. All UPS' attached to one server to act as a proxy........FAIL. One-to-one ratio of Agent to UPS. So, I would need to attach to multiple servers. Plus, with the Agent, I can't load the network shutdown agent that lets a single UPS control shutdown of multiple PC's over network.

Listener Feedback

From listener....Brian who posted a comment

Great show!

Do you guys find that co workers expect you to fix their personal computers? I never really had that happen until my latest sysadmin job. Now I will come into work and there will be a PC on my desk with a note from someone’s house. Tomorrow I have to fix a co workers kids broken LCD on their laptop.

Our management doesn’t seem to mind, however, when doing this it backs me up further. What stance would you take on this issue?

[KEITH] We've talked briefly on this before. I don't have a problem working on co-workers PC's as long as they ask nicely. I do consulting on the side, but would never charge them. I do it on my terms and at my convenience. I chalk it up to a part of the geek's life. Plus, doing it on my terms ensures it doesn't get annoying.

Keith - http://www.miniatur-wunderland.com/ I love miniatures. When I was a kid I had all kinds of miniature stuff. I must have misplaced it all....it was very small after all. We have a place like this near where I live called Roadside America. We would stop there when I was a kid on way upstate for camping trips. I took my kids there a couple years ago.
