  • Adding Printer on Vista Workstation [KEITH]
-I had a problem on Vista 32-bit adding an HP LaserJet? 4300 from a printer share on a server.
-Local Print Spooler service would crash. Thought it was driver related, but I was able to add it another way.
-It crashed when I used my shortcut way to add \\Server then double-click on the printer share
-Worked when I added through Add Printer wizard and found it in the directory.
-Everything I find indicates this problem on 64-bit Vista with DEP the cause. This is 32-bit Vista.

  • Feature creep........ [RICH]
- When will does a desktop become a server?
- This all started because the company has allowed people to thing ti is okay to run business critical apps on a PC.
- So I am setting up a Peer server, and I believe there should be some minimal fault tolerance.
- Does feature creep happen in both directions? I think it does.
- Mirror hard drives on desktop for EU's anyone doing it? I know serious gamers have done this for years, but how soon does it become part of the enterprise desktop?
- is there real value in doing this?

  • Authoritative Time in Active Directory [KEITH]
-Went to a staff meeting and we noticed none of the clocks had the correct time. Since most rely on PC and PBX, I made sure they were synced and pulled from an authoritative source.
-Windows has the Windows Time service and workstations will sync time with PDC on login, but I needed an external source to keep the DC on time.
-It's a little confusing since they reference NTP as well as Microsofts flavor of NTP, but you want to stick with NTP since the world outside uses it.

- The things I was looking for
- simple Raid 1 hardware disk mirroring
- fast connection to drive, esata
- Has the ability to connect using usb if needed
- ability if hardware fails to still access hard drive and backup
- Drives can be formated to NTFS
  • Microsoft Submits Driver Code to Linux Project [KEITH]
-Enable Linux support on Hyper-V
-Necessary to compete with VMWare. Steve and I have gone back and forth on this. Linux in the enterprise is real and MS needs to support it.
  • Crystal Reports Alternatives [KEITH]
-Have a bunch of custom Crystal Reports that hit Great Plains, our CRM system, and other proprietary stuff
-Most have no need to build, just run reports with refreshed data.
-Crystal Reports Viewer 2008 is free from SAP/BO, but is only works against a Crystal Reports Server. The server refreshes the data (or someone with the full version) and saves it into the report. The viewer just uses that cached data.
-Taking a serious look at SQL Reporting Services as a way of delivering reports to users.
-Comparable to Crystal Reports Server, but without the huge cost.
-It's even included with SQL 2008 Express edition if you wanted to tinker
-Can build reports via browser, but I recommend downloading SQL Server Report Builder 2.0
