Interview with Beth Lynn Eicher

Tonight we are joined by Beth Lynn Eicher, a devoted Linux systems administrator who is involved with the Ohio LinuxFest which is being held Sept 25 through Sept 27, 2009 in Columbus, OH. Beth Lynn is also an avid Linux advocate and maintains the blog What will we use? which discusses the decline of Microsoft's market share over the coming years as competition from Free/Open Source Software gains ground.

Welcome to the show Beth Lynn.

-Who typically attends; hobbyists? IT Professionals?
-Where do you draw attendees from? Is everyone from the Ohio area?
-What kind of knowledge could I expect to gain from attending?
-There are a couple of things you wanted to highlight that are happening this year at LinuxFest?; Tell me about them.
--Oracle Virtualization InstallFest?
--LPI cram
--Zenoss Training Bootcamp
--LOPSA Tutorial
--OLFU
  • You are also actively involved with LOPSA. What can you tell us about that?
  • What attracted you to focus on Linux in your career?
  • You supported Linux at the Carnegie Mellon School Of Computer Science; what can you tell us about your time there.
-In what capacity were they utilizing Linux?
  • Distro's; are they a help or a hindrance to Linux adoption?
  • Where do you think Linux will ultimately end up in the enterprise?
-Is a Linux desktop in our future or will it mainly be relegated to the server side?
  • It's no secret the IT is a male dominated field; what is it like for a female to work in IT?

Reminder that Ohio LinuxFest? will be held September 25th through September 27th, 2009 in Columbus, OH at the Columbus Convention Center. Basic attendance is free, but there are several affordable packages that help support their efforts and maybe get you a little schwag. Register online at OhioLinux.org.

  • Problems printing Excel [KEITH]
-New printer installed for workgroup. One user having problems printing to new printer after a couple days use.
-I try to print the Excel workbook and it just ejects a blank page. I try a test page, PDF, and Word doc and all work fine.
-Found in the Excel workbook on Page Setup that the print quality field was blank. I selected 600DPI in the drop down and the workbook prints fine.
-Found all his Excel docs did not carry that value when trying to print to that printer.

  • Odd Video Problem [KEITH]
-User calls and says the video went haywire on a workstation; Error message then everything became huge on the screen.
-Found workstation set to 640X480 at 4-bit color. Figured I'd just set it back and chalk it up to user error.
-Wouldn't reset resolution or color. Pulled up the error she saw and it indicated the video driver failed because it had gone into an infinite loop (Just like Steve's cat litter box). Reboot and reset video it says.
-I restart, fix the video settings, and submit the error report. It gives me two solutions; upgrade drivers or disable acceleration.
-First, I think this is the first time submitting an error has yielded a fix suggestion for me. And one that is relevant to boot.
-Check for updates to driver; none. Going to wait and see if it re-occurs and change the settings. If not, I'll be replacing video card.
  • MS Dynamics GP Tips & Tricks [KEITH]
-Not sure how many listeners support MS Dynamics GP in the jobs, but I know some do.
-Our warehouse manager calls with a problem processing Purchase Orders. New vendor uses three decimal places in the Qty field for shipping and invoicing raw materials. The inventory items in our system are setup with only two decimal places. Since there is history with the items, it will not let you change the configuration of the inventory items.
-We could round, but getting it to tie when invoice is entered by accounting would be a pain, plus over time it would be a hassle to manage.
-We could create a new item, but since everyone else in the company expects widgets to be item number 005.9765, it would cause even more problems.
-Found this site with lots of SQL snippets to fix these types of problems. In this case, it was a straight change to one field and it now accepts three digits after the decimal place when receiving the PO.
-Once I tested it on one item without issue, I modified the rest.
