  • Another sister, another virus call [KEITH]
-Got a panic call from my oldest sister in a panic because she just bought a new iMac and she got DSL and now she is online and the computer is indicating is infected with malware.
-I asked her to read what it said on the screen and she said it indicated she had 573 infected files and she needed to run a full system clean. She had already clicked several times on the clean button but it still indicates 573 infected files.
-I asked her what anti-virus/anti-malware package was giving her this alert (I wasn't with her when she bought this and she buys from a small local dealer that might have thrown something in her package deal).
-She tells me it says "Windows Security Alert" and lists all the infections. I asked her again what PC she was on (since she does have some XP machines for her home-based business) and she confirmed it was the new iMac.......which does not have any Windows OS loaded.
-Took a little while to explain. I'm assuming the threat targeted only Windows and her clicking on it did not cause any infection.

  • Adventures with ESXi? [KEITH]
-Production control setup uses Sun workstations. They bought a replacement/spare unit, but it wasn't Sparc based (which our control system needs), so they gave it to me for testing rather than return (got a great deal on it).
-Quad core box that just screamed to be virtualized. So, I loaded up 8 GB RAM for dirt cheap and loaded ESXi?.
-All went well until I added the first VM. I converted one of the virtual appliances I downloaded for project management servers and it converted and populated on the ESXi? inventory fine.
-When I started the VM, the whole ESXi? server crashed into debug mode. I tried converting another VM and got same results.
-I rebuilt the ESXi? thinking I screwed it up, but same results afterward.
-Downloading Hyper-V now......although I mostly have Linux VM's to put on there.

-Recently started getting failures on backing up Exchange 2007 mailboxes with Granular Restore Technology enabled.
-Error indicated Access Denied, but my service account hasn't changed
-Found article on troubleshooting this error and found that mailboxes attached to users in AD that are disabled will generate this message.
-Since we had two employees leave recently and I disabled their AD account, it appears this is the root of the problem.
-Now all that is left is to fight with an older Windows 2000 server with an out-of-date BackupExec? Remote Agent that refuses to upgrade properly.

  • VDI vs. Bare Metal Client Hypervisor [KEITH]
-It will be interesting to see where this goes. On the one hand, VDI requires more back-end resources to build but is more centrally controlled.
-One the other, the Bare Metal Client Hypervisor distributes the hardware, but presents more management challenges.
-NxTop? is the one they mention in the article, but Citrix and others have been working on this.
-This is my holy grail of desktop virtualization....but then again, I'm a geek. Would the average want (or be able to use) this?

RE: Forcing Windows Updates With PowerShell

I have posted an updated (and formless) version of the script.

From listener....Martin W.

Martin posted a comment regarding the discussion on fanboyism and VMWare vs. Hyper-V and the future market share of these products. It's some observations and clarifications on the topic and if you don't generally review the comments, it might be worth a read.

From listener....Glenn

Just discovered your podcast, thanks for putting that out there.

Thought I’d add one to your list of web-based project management software for you to check out… web2project

It’s a fork of dotproject from some of the main developers.
