  • Short interview/introduction of Robert Dowell [KEITH]
-How did you get into IT? Were you always in the Tech Field?
-What area of IT do you specialize? Servers, networks, desktops, etc.
-What was your first computer?
-Do you have a blog or any site you want to plug?

  • Wireless verses Wired when it is the correct choice? [RICH]
-I recently have been working on a project where the cost of installing fiber and copper cabling will exceed $20,000.00.
-I have been pressured into taking a stand against the installation being done wirelessly.
-I think in my industry taking into the account the fact we are doing considerablly more remote support of sites
- Wireless infrastructure still has to many issues that are not easily resolved remotely
- also to many variables exist in the industry I work in.
- large objects that can interfere with line of sight and such

  • Problem reading a registry value in a script [ROB]
-I do a fair amount of scripting for my team. I recently had a problem with reading a registry value in a vbscript. [more details if needed] It wound up being that due to the permissions, using WMI to read the value would not work while using the WScript?.Shell object would. I still have not figured out why.

  • OLE Server Error [KEITH]
-The operation on the Acrobat Document object failed. The OLE server may not be registered. To register the OLE server, reinstall it.
-Received error when closing an Acrobat Document that was opened from an Access 2003 DB. Document stored as an OLE embedded file.
-Not sure if or how related, but the DB is part of a replication scheme and it stopped replicating last week because there isn't enough room on the partition to copy the temp repl files. The trans log has grown significantly in the past two weeks. Last successful repl temp was 1.27 GB and now trans log is over 4 GB. Not sure why, but it won't shrink either.
-Haven't tried the DBCC command yet, that's next on my agenda.
  • Problem with Citrix and Infopath [ROB]
-We are just beginning to transition users to Citrix Thin Clients. We are having a lot of growing pains around this. One recent oddball problem is file links in InfoPath? forms. They just plain don't work. I unfortunately am at a loss on this one. I'll give details and caress the great Mind of Root minds on it.

  • Check Your BIOS [KEITH]
-Loaded Win 7 Pro RTM on netbook and have been pleased with performance. Could not get webcam working. It was in device manager but could not access the device to view video.
-Research turned up a note to check BIOS for state of switch on OS Install (in progess, finished)
-Mine was on 'In progress' and after I changed it to 'complete' the webcam worked as well as Windows detected another couple system devices and installed them.
-I checked my ESXi? box and found the same setting....fixing did not fix my purple screen problem though.

  • Handling Automatic Updates For Production Servers [ROB]
-I am by no means a server guy. I do deal with them on a regular basis. This is a Serverfault question ergarding allowing automatic reboots for patches on windows servers. I provided my opinion in the question and I would be curious to hear yours.
-
  • IT Contractors [ROB]
-I am a contractor and the company that I am working at is going from a Staff Augmentation Model to A Services model. I have some generic concerns to discuss.

Listener Feedback

From listener....Brad

Hey guys I was just doing some random web surfing and I stumbled across this site http://www.websiteoutlook.com/www.mindofroot.com , I hit it because I had accidentally typed googe.com. Thought you might enjoy,

Cheers

 Brad

[KEITH] Interesting. I'd love to know how they weight the individual things to determine the value. It looks like it's on hits, referrals in and out, ads, etc. This is our podcast retirement fund.

From listener....Justo Also from The PePe? Show

Hey guys,

Just thought I'd share this with you since you have been a fan of sites like tinyurl.com. The problem I heard you talk about several months ago was how the site you were using sometimes would work, and other times it wouldn't. When I heard you talking about it, I thought, "Wouldn't it be great if you can host your own link shrinker?" Well someone has already thought of that for WordPress? users. Here is the link: http://prettylinkpro.com. The plugin is not free, but it will allow you to create links like http://www.mindofroot.com/112-backupexec1 that would go to http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/305383.htm or http://www.mindofroot.com/112-backupexec2 pointing to http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/docs/289649.htm. Or, even better yet, you could just name them like http://www.mindofroot.com/112a or http://www.mindofroot.com/112b, etc. This way during the show, you could give out the link by just saying the episode and then the name or letter. 'A' being the first link, 'b' the second and so on. I think you get the point.

Anyway, the plugin can be found here: http://prettylinkpro.com.

[KEITH] Imagine what Steve could do with PowerShell with this plugin.
