  • Short interview/introduction of Winston Wolf [KEITH]
-How did you get into IT? Were you always in the Tech Field?
-What area of IT do you specialize? Servers, networks, desktops, etc.
-What was your first computer?
-You started the 'In Love With Tech' podcast that you do with your wife. First, what's is it like to have a wife that understands technology and can follow along when you have a geek moment?
-You also work with your wife, does that present any challenges? e.g. competition, whose got more knowledge, etc

  • SQL Log [KEITH]
-Winston gave a great article....one complication....DB is part of replication scheme as publisher.
-Scripted the replication setup and publication and then detached DB and cleared log file.
-Ran saved scripts to re-establish publisher and publication setup, but got an error registering subscriber...'The remote server is not defined as a subscription server.'
-Using IP since the repl partner is a stand-alone box in DMZ through firewall. MS indicates this can be a problem and to create alias.
-I tried creating aliases and avoiding the use of IP, but still wouldn't work.
-Ended up manually creating the subscription figuring it would at least add it as a subscription server. After that the query resulted in the subscriber already existing. Oh well.

  • Tape came undone....Network is Down! [KEITH]
-Got notified when I got back to work that access to the production control network from the back office was not working.
-I check the link on the firewall, and it's down hard. I check the other end and try changing switchports, no luck.
-I'm using a CAT5? splitter on this run since I only had one wire out to the production control room, so I started to suspect a problem with them even though they are not active.
-Decided to trace the cable and found that from the firewall, it hits a junction box on the back of my rack which has runs to the main patch panel where the connection is split. The junction box was mounted in the rack with double-sided tape. I found it hanging and the cable for the production control network pulled out. It looks like the tape dried out and when the junction box fell, it hit a bracket just-so on the pressure release pin for the RJ45? connector and they separated.

  • Domain Keys/DKIM [KEITH]
-Having a problem sending emails to customers GMail? acounts. It transports fine, but ends up in SPAM folder.
-Did a lot of research into how GMail? filters and it is very restrictive.
-We use SPF records, shouldn't that have been enough?
-DKIM, while not new is not widely adopted (from what I can determine)
-Although ratified in 2006, it was not included as a feature in Exchange 2007

  • Build your own math test [KEITH]
-Daughter is going through evaluations at school and flash cards are great, but don't replicate a test environment well.
-Was about to build one of these, but seek and ye shall find came through.
