- SQL Server Index Fragmentation [STEVE]
-Maintaining your indexes
-Rebuilding
-Fragmentation over 30%
-Reorganizing
-Fragmentaiton over 15% and less than 30 %
-Find this information from sys.dm_db_index_physical_stats - dynamic management function (sql server 2005/2008)
- VMWare Player 3 can create Virtual Machines [STEVE]
-
VMWare Player 3 has just reached release candidate stage and can create virtual machines.. Is a new name in the works? Or will it mean that you are just "playing" with virtual machines?
-
- Adaptec RAID controller Purchase [KEITH]
-So, I bought a RAID controller for my
VMWare test server. Listener Mike indicated he's had most luck with RAID vs. basic controllers
-In a rush, I ordered the card not the kit and didn't get the pigtail for the Unified Serial Architecture.
-Single high density connector (Mini-SAS) that you connect a splitter/pigtail to that breaks out to four SATA or SAS connectors.
-I had hoped to have an update on my
VMWare test environment, but it will have to wait until next week when I get the part.
- Reading Query Plans [STEVE]
-Reading query plans
-In my performance tuning efforts, I've been working my way through the SQL Server Execution Plans book by Grant Fritchey (also known as the Scary DBA). It is a free ebook (registration required) or you can get a hard copy from Amazon.
-Great stuff on reading graphical plans, what each of the operations means, how to read XML and text plans, and goes into using hints, modifying execution plans, and more.
-One of the best things I've learned so far is what the difference between seeks and scans are, and how to evaluate their impact on my queries.
-We use a Merchant service gateway for processing credit cards from our website that required an upgrade back on Sept. 1. Essentially, the gateway provider we had was acquired and we needed to point to the new companies servers (since the SSL cert was expiring on the old vendors servers). Plus some changes to the process on new servers.
-Since I can't code my way out of a wet paper bag, I hired a company to make the change and we tested. All went well and we converted without problems. This week, we got a weird issue where someone paid and it flagged as a duplicate transaction.
-Spoke with gateway provider and we chalked it up to anomaly, but then I got another less than an hour later. Spoke with someone in tech support at provider and he indicated the new site required a 'Request ID' and likely my ID's were not unique. I searched the site code and indeed found the code for generating the ID.
-Since the code must be completely unique to the transaction, he recommended using date & time based ID to avoid repetition. Found the code instead uses a random number generator to build an ID based off a string of alphanumeric characters. Ironically, it looks like this code was provided by the processor in the SDK to assist developers.
-Took the CC processing offline. Came up with idea to change seed string to buy some time.
-Never got review or response from Dev, so next morning I put my idea into place.
-Dev accessed a little later and changed the generator to use the GUID generator function. I would have preferred the use of date/time as I mentioned in my email to them about this problem, but it got it up and running.
-UPDATE: Site back down. Despite my getting two successful transactions, no customer can process. Gets
VBScript error on passing argument.
-Original code genreqID(32) and function was defined genreqID(tmplength) for length of ID
-New code genreqID(32) and function defined without parameter genreqID().
-awaiting developer review.
