  • Print media dieing - but Augmented [RICH]
-How will print media compete, maybe ‘Augmented Reality’
-
-I'm moving BackupExec? to a new server. I'm not planning on moving the DB and job history, so I'm not looking at a full migration.
-I do want to recreate my selection lists since I've reviewed them for duplications, unnecessary data, etc.
-Knew they were in the BEDB, but couldn't find reference in tables to selectionlists. Googled it and found someone had already wrote the SQL script for me as well.
-Also found a BackupExec? command line function to export the job def to a text file. However, it is not as clean to read and manipulate.
-Lastly, there is the BackupExec? Utility that is for copying the full media server configuration from one server to another.
  • Sybase Corruption Issue [KEITH]
-Have an application that takes readings on a laptop which get processed and uploaded to a server where they are imported into another application. Both apps from same vendor.
-Problem on laptop (not sure what) but Sybase keeps getting corrupt and the only fix from vendor is to wipe with new DB and redo the data collection.
-Was able to manually re-create from the raw data file the manipulation done by first piece of software and successfully import the readings.
-Need to find a Sybase utility that will rebuild the corruption and can't believe how finicky it is.

  • Out sourcing of support - good - bad - ugly [RICH]
- At the coompany I work for they have out sourced level 1 support
- hold times 45+
- Lenovo - May be they have out sourced their support as well as it was terrible

  • Malware infection on Warehouse Manager's PC [KEITH]
-SpywareProtect2009? - User claims it came from a floppy, but I don't know.
-Used trick Steve Cherubino has been talking about recently. Instead of a locking USB thumb drive, use SD card in reader and lock it.
-SAV CE found and sort of cleaned. I user autorun from MS/Sysinternals to look for stuff launching and found 2 under IMAP fixer that called the malware executable.
-Ran a full scan after reboot with SuperAntiVirus? and it was clean.

  • PC Boot problem [KEITH]
-User claims he has DOS screen and PC won't boot.
-I find it powered off and on boot it stops at the BIOS info screen, where I see listed above the HDD, an iPod.
-I unplug the iPod nano from USB and reboot...TADA it boots fine.
-I'm guessing he enabled disk mode.

  • Employee Training - the challenge [RICH]
- Employee studied in theories and programing
- missed the obvious
- School Trained or life trained?
- challenged him by asking him to outline the drive mapings for the login script
-Link: http://
  • Corrupted Registry [KEITH]
-PC refused to boot. Error "LSASS.EXE failed to initialize.
-Would not even boot into safe mode. Found causes pointing to corrupt file or DLL, malware, or corrupted registry.
-Tried slaving drive and scanning for virus/malware, but found nothing. Tried replacing LSASS files but would not correct.
-Wound up pulling registry backups from a system restore point manually and pushing them into place and it worked fine.
-Reboot had SAVCE finding the InfoStealer? trojan which is a password stealing trojan. Not sure if tried to put hooks into LSASS which handles your local login, so it may or may not have been the cause.
