  • Poor Mans Digital Signage [KEITH]
-Just using PowerPoint? on a loop
-Wanted to use a wide-screen display (16:9), but PowerPoint2003? has the standard format (4:3) on all templates.
-Simple fix.
  • Merge Multiple Word Documents [KEITH]
-Boss got several Word docs that combined make a manual.
-Tried Cut, Copy & Paste methods, but formatting kept getting screwed up.
-Found macro that pulls all Word docs from a directory and merges them. Doesn't allow you to set order, but I was able to work around it.
  • Iron Mountian online Backup [RICH]
- Okay so I did something not so smart, I was working with a script that deletes partitions
- Oops, there went my partition on my laptop
- And oh yeah drive is encrypted.

  • DNS Ports [KEITH]
-Having a problem with a DNS server on a Windows 2000 box. I was actually troubleshooting something else and ran TCPView? and saw hundreds of listening ports.
-Since it opens roughly 2500 ports, I thought this was causing my connectivity problem, but turns out it was part of the Kaminski flaw fix and I don't recall noticing it before.
-According to one post, Microsoft did this to avoid the performance impact caused by randomization of the port. Essentially, they pre-seeded the ports and reserved them. BIND supposedly randomizes the port at time of need and takes a a performance hit.
  • Virtualization Progress [KEITH]
-ESXi? up and running on an HP DL365? G5. Two Quad Procs and 16 GB RAM.
-I've virtualized a couple machines using the free stand-alone converter client. and I've had no success with any Win2k3 boxes. Both times, I was unable to start the VM.
-First one was a test box with nothing on it and I chose to shrink the disks since they didn't need to be that large on the target. Would not boot claiming unable to read disk. Worse, it stripped the original machine so that I could not login into it.
-Second was my WSUS server and I did not tell it to modify disks. Launching VM just gave blank screen with blinking cursor after BIOS POST. Original server was left in good working order. The original box was a PC re-purposed as a server (now you see why I wanted to move it), so it may be because VMWare chose SCSI disks on the VM instead of IDE. Will try again.
