Chit-Chat - What's going on with you?

[Steve]

  • I can't believe it is almost Christmas. This month has gone very quickly. Recently, I've been working on automating our build and deploy process. I thought I understood the ASP.NET stuff, but I've learned a lot more than I cared to recently.

  • Best and Worst Operating Systems of the last 10 years [KEITH]
-Review List
-Do you agree or disagree? It seems to me that all the Greatest OS's are the most current revisions of the Major/mainstream OS's. Doesn't that just state the latest is the greatest? So, next decade, Windows 2008 R2 and Android will be the pits because Windows 2020 will totally rock your socks off.
-I think it should have considered the technical and architectural merits of the OS in considering greatness.
-One commenter talked about BeOS? and someone replied that it wasn't release in the last decade....well neither was Windows. If I remember correctly, Windows 2008 originated as Windows NT way back in the early 90's. So, why wouldn't BeOS?'s latest iteration be considered?
  • How to make a product sysadmin-friendly [STEVE]
-Tom Limoncelli - author of System and Practice of Network Administration
-as a command line interface
-has an API so it can be remotely administered
-has a "silent install" mode so it can be cleanly deployed
-has a config file that is ASCII so it can be stored in a revision control system; and the same file can be input INTO the system.
-has a clearly defined way to do backups and restores.
-has a clean way to monitor for up/down issues (know when there is an emergency) AND vital statistics that relate to scaling/latency (know how to debug slowness) AND historical monitoring (be able to predict far in advance when we need to buy more capacity)
  • Application Permissions causing Profile problem [KEITH]
-DWG TrueView? 2009 and 2010 from AutoDesk? and I'm loading it on Server 2003 for use via Terminal Services.
-If user is not an admin, it throws a bunch of errors. One of which refers to the users profile. Way to fix majority of errors was to add the DWGVIEWR executable to the DEP exemption list.
-Temp solution to initially run the app as the user after making them member of local admin group. You can then drop them out of the admin group, but they still get the profile error.
-Worse, once the get the profile error, you have to trash their profile and relaunch the app with admin privs. to get rid of it.
-Now, I have to figure out what it is calling that it can't get to without admin rights to fix it. Setting up a test user to keep trashing the profile until I get it figured out.
-It's like XP Mode on steriods.
-Requires Win7 clients, but can run apps hosted on XP or Vista
  • DNS Resource Records [KEITH]
-Thought this was my answer to removing proxy. Been hesitating since intranet DNS is same as internal Windows AD Domain (INTRA.COMPANY.COM). Only by splitting DNS is it working.
-Thought use of resource records for HTTP against that name would be able to direct traffic properly, but it seems the client needs to be aware it is making a resource request. Since IE and Firefox are not making a resource record request, they still get the internal domain controller IP when they query.
-Anybody know how these can get used? HTTP is a standard service it supports, but how do I get the client to support it?

  • Google DNS Service [KEITH]
-Like OpenDNS?, only Googly. Any concerns with them having this data?
-As long as they don't hijack the 404, I'd prefer it.
  • Blue Collar and White Collar Admins [STEVE]
-Matt over at the Standalone Sysadmin blog had an interesting post where he derived from a post about types of developers.
-Matt asks if there are blue and white collar admin - and if so, what is the distinction?
-Matt suggests that one area of differentiation is in a college degree (versus certs or on the job training).
-I think there is a difference and that there are blue and white collar admins, but the distinction does not come from a degreee, but from an approach to the job.
-A blue collar admin likes to get his hands dirty in the problems and activities, where the white collar admin has a more strategic focus.
-To illustrate my thoughts on the matter:
-Blue collar admins approach everything from the standpoint of solving the symptom or treating the immediate problem.
-White collar admins, on the other hand, look to solve root cause, implement preventative measures, and try to solve a problem once, rather than once a week.
-I have been both types of admin, and I much prefer being on the white collar side (even if it is more work.
