  • Dell Inspiron 4100 problem [KEITH]
-Laptop keeps shutting down after about 10-15 minutes. Not software as I tried UBCD and still died.
-Laptop has ThermTrip? function when CPU gets too hot. I found CPU cooling fan not running. Replaced fan and it now runs (and turns on/off as needed), but laptop still shuts down.
-Oddly, found that the heat sink that wraps around fan can only have 3 of 4 screws tightened to let fan work.
-Not sure what else would trip it? I hit the BIOS and disabled any/all power management functions just to be sure they weren't flaking out.

  • DNS Info Tool [KEITH]
-Cool tool found accidentally by co-worker.
-Gives a ton of info on your domain and subdomains. It even noted a mistake I made in advertising my public DNS servers.
  • Slow Sharepoint Load [KEITH]
-Initial Page load. Most sites on the interwebs blame the App Pool recycling. Most fixes revolved around a utility to "warm-up" the site by making calls to each page.
-I'm not sure if this is the case. Running TCPView? on server, I see the W3WP?.EXE process makes calls to several hosts to update/populate the web parts on the home page. I have time and weather web parts as well as two RSS Feed web parts (Google News and an Industry Trade Association News Feed)
-I'm going to test by disabling the web parts as see what happens.

  • Where have all the Windows OS replacements gone? [RICH]
- Google Chrome - Chromium
- Linux Distros
- ReactOS? 0.3.11 is still in under heavy development (alpha stage) and is not ready for everyday use.

  • Caching Out [KEITH]
-Have an Employee goal tracking package that is run from Vendor as SaaS?. I created a company link goals.company.net that hits a redirect to the third-party site.
-Originally redirect pointed to the test site, but on cut-over I changed to prod site.
-I put it into production and worked for me. As soon as users tried, they hit the test site still.
-Found users still need proxy for access to old intranet (Yeah still on my to-do list) and proxy was caching the old redirect.
-I wanted to clear the cache, but found no way in the ISA 2000 MMC. There are several ways to do it from manual to use of a utility.
-One downside to the util CacheDir?.exe is that it takes a long time to load the full cache info then to find the one entry.

-We talked about a utility to troubleshoot issues running apps without Admin privileges.
-I used this to troubleshoot our customer billing app that has been a thorn in my side.
-Turns out it needs write access to the root of the C:\ drive to drop a temp file.
-I was able to grant permission to that dir only and now works fine.
-Still need to work on the CAD applications on the Terminal Server...but more on that later in listener feedback.

Two Postings:

Episode 124 comment.

Keith, I just did some side consulting for a car dealership. They implemented HP thin clients. I had a very strange experience and wanted to see if it was similar to yours in Episode 124.

The RDS server was 2008 R2. They bought 15 RDS Device CALS for 15 thin clients. Every time the thin client connected, it would be listed as a “temporary” license. Eventually all 15 were listed as a temporary license. There were no errors, connection problems, and the licensing server didn’t complain at all. On HP’s forum, they said that it was normal to act this way.

Maybe it’s me, but I though the client was issued a license until a certain date or it was revoked?

HP’s tech support

I have an issue with HP thin clients and terminal server for a side consulting job. I called HP who walked me through some preliminary steps. Then they provided a case number. I tried their steps (which didn’t work) on a Friday. On Saturday, they left a voicemail following up on the problem. I called them back on Monday and referenced the case number. They said they would have someone call me. When they called, 2 days later, I let it go to voicemail. Once I was onsite with the thin clients, I called them back. They stated that they need a direct phone number for me because “they will not be able to provide support through voicemail.” I told them I am not always onsite and this is a side job. They insisted for an alternate number. They said explicitly that they do not provide oncall support for thin clients.

In order for me to talk to a technician, I need to be onsite when they call me. I just found that out today…..that is insane!

Just listened to the podcast.

Keith mentioned that he was having trouble with his CAD application not working for non-admins.

Take a look at the Application Compatibility Toolkit from Microsoft. It gives you the ability to add “shims” that intercept calls to forbidden areas and redirect them to areas that the user has access to.

I used it a long time ago to allow remove all users from the Local Admins group as part of a desktop deployment project. It really worked well and I’m sure it has improved since then.
