  • Apologize for pod-poofing - my fault
  • What we hope to do with the show.
-Rich Blogging
-Individual shows - I know we aren't good alone, but I we're trying.
-Volunteer co-hosts. I received an email from someone local to me that can possibly record with me when he can.
-Non-regular shows....I intended to get back two weeks ago and record this solo re-introduction...Yeah, not so much.

  • Belkin Network USB hub
-New phone system has call reporting software. They wanted to host on a PC, but I preferred a VM.
-Needs hardware key dongle that I couldn't map through ESXi?. Found this Belkin unit with client software that puts USB devices on the network.
  • Consulting Work
-New client. Acting as his on-call IT person, so it has been a lot of work.
-Converted them to Exchange from POP/SMTP mail with hosting provider.
-New firewall and VPN capabilities. Were using PPTP to Windows SBS server, but could not work from behind NAT gateways.

  • Mikogo Remote Support & Conferencing - FREE
-With the new client, I needed a remote support option.
-I could have gone with the free 30-day trials from Citrix, Logmein, Teamviewer, etc. but they are expenses after 30 days.->-Found Mikogo's free product.
-Cross-platform - although I did run into some troubles when going from my Mac to a client's Vista PC.
-I not only used it for remote desktop support, but I did a 2.5 hour Outlook/Email training session via the package as well.
  • New FiOS? connections at work
-35Mb/35Mb connections at both main office and remote DR site. Best of all, since they are so close, the public static IP's are in the same subnet.
-Now have the DR replication through this pipe and pushing desktop browsing through it as well.

  • New phone system
-New VoIP? system from Inter-Tel/Mitel.
-Bit of a disappointment. Phone call quality was not as good as I had hoped and it is mostly due to the physical quality of the hardware
-First, let me say that I didn't orchestrate the upgrade, but acted solely as technical implementation.
-We were told the phones were capable of all kinds of custom programming - pushing HTML and images to the screens, etc.
-Found out later that we didn't have the right back-end system to push the content, so although the phones were capable, we couldn't utilize the feature.

  • Wireless Network Install
-Now that I have redesigned my network with the VoIP? installation, I could finally install a wireless network without worrying about compromising security on the back-end.
-Decided to setup two wireless networks; i.e. two SSID's. One CompanyGUEST? and the other Company. Guest gives internet only access and the other gives back office network.
-Using the Cisco WAP200? small business AP's that can map up to four (4) SSID's to VLAN ID tags. I also set up a management VLAN to put all the mgmt interfaces for network devices (switches, firewalls, UPS's, etc) into and it allows for a default/mgmt VLAN for the mgmt interface.
-Before you think it, NO, I did not use VLAN 1. In fact, VLAN 1 is disabled where I could (some switches didn't allow) and at least forbidden on all ports.
-Having problem with SSID2? not mapping to proper VLAN. SSID1? VLAN mapping works and mgmt VLAN access works to manage, but SSID2? does not and cannot hit DHCP server.
-I put a phys port in VLAN for SSID2? and it works great, so it is something between the WAP and the switch. Also on latest firmware, so no option there.
-Called Cisco and they had me try something I didn't think of; flip the SSID/VLAN map. So, map my known working VLAN to the non=working SSID and vice-versa.
-Guess what, the Company SSID connected and got an address from the CompanyGUEST? VLAN. Cisco tech was baffled (she Webex'd in) and they took a copy of the config to examine. Waiting to hear back from them now.
  • 3Com Switches
-Needed to get a couple new managed switches for the DC with the network upgrade.
-Frustrating the diversity in 3Com's managed switch line.

  • Nook
-Finally selected an ereader. Went with the B&N Nook since it was the most open and still had the features.
-I'm really pleased..except for the fact I paid $289 a couple months ago and the price is now $189.
-Why I chose Nook over Kindle, iPad, etc.; Display (vs. LCD), ePub support, DRM ePUB support, Expandability (microSD), ease of loading docs (sideload)
-Still plan to buy an iPad someday when I have the cash. Maybe after Christmas and my Birthday I can save up enough. I want to wait for ver 2 anyway.
