Listener Feedback

From listener Michael from Valletta, Inner Harbour, Malta who posted a pin on the Frappr map Thank you guys for putting up such a great show. Really good stuff.

From Listener Paul Sylvester who posted a comment on the Podcamp Philly blog entry I love your podcast come visit my website and link back!

[KEITH] I am pretty sure Paul is a regular contributor to The Mike Tech Show on the new round-table shows and his blog has some interesting stuff. I'll add a link to his blog at Laforge129.blogspot.com.

From Listener ??? who posted on the ListerIdeas? page of the wiki... This is not as much a show idea, more a little complaint: this is the second time the blog anti-spam system blocked my comments (the first time I - tried to - comment about the Skype worm which I analyzed and created the description for BitDefender??). Probably this is because I multitask a lot (ie I start writing a comment, then I go off and some other thing, come back to the comment, etc) and maybe it has some timeout mechanism. Anyway here is my second comment which I wanted to add to the latest episode:

Just a quick note: on episode 26 of the Sourcetrunk podcast (http://www.sourcetrunk.com/?q=node/81) there was a discussion about a free XML editor called \"XML Copy Editor\". Also on Windows I use Notepad2 (http://www.flos-freeware.ch/notepad2.html), which is a very lightweight Notepad replacement with all features I need like syntax higlight, go to line, regex search / replace, etc.

Keep up the good work.

Best regards.

Summary: add comment which didn't pass WP-Hashcash

Link: http://www.sourcetrunk.com/?q=node/81 Link: http://www.flos-freeware.ch/notepad2.html

[KEITH] First, 3 points for originality on getting your message to us. Second, I apologize for the troubles you encountered in making a comment. I probably went overboard on security, but I've seen too many people hit with blog & wiki spam, that I was just trying to prevent it from happening. We actually did have a case of Wiki spam. I don't know how they created a page since I did the same lockdown as the blog, but they did it. I removed it, so we're not serving up ads. If you can, email me at Keith [at] acoupleofadmins.com so I can try to troubleshoot. Not sure if you missed the hash=cash question (I know of one person who did and it dropped their comment), etc. I won't mention you on the podcast, I just want to make sure it works or if I need to lower the security a bit.

Lastly; Thank you for the XML editor links. Both are very nice, but I am really impressed with the XML Copy Editor. Like the one I originally used, this one uses multiple windows to show the groupings, etc. It's definitely worth checking out.

News Items

Gateway To Buy Packard Bell

-move funded by Acer Inc. as part of its planned acquisition of Gateway.
-The acquisition will be a blow to Lenovo Group Ltd., which in early August revealed it was in discussions with Packard Bell over a possible acquisition.
-This is reported to give them the presence they need in Europe to round out their plan of global domination.

[Keith] I'm not sure my the M&A market is heating up all of a sudden. Maybe the depressed dollar is making the US tech companies attractive and Acer figured this was a good time to start building their empire.

VMware? to release SMB virtualization kits by year end

-...release three software packages by the end of the year to help small and medium-size businesses take on virtualization projects.
-The packages offer varying levels of features depending on price. At the core of all three is either VMware?'s ESX Server or ESX Server 3i, a product released last month whose hypervisor is embedded in flash memory in the server hardware.
-The cheapest kit, called Infrastructure 3 Foundation, is priced at US$2,995 for three two-processor licenses. The Infrastructure 3 Standard High Availability kit lists for $5,995, for two, two-processor nodes. The Infrastructure 3 Midsize Acceleration Kit accommodates three, two-processor nodes and sells for $14,495.

[Keith] I think most SMB's are using VMWare Server on top of the Windows platform and the ESX/GSX realm has been way over-priced. This looks like a real viable option for me to get better performance for relatively little cost.

Microsoft disables Internet Explorer 7 validation process

-Microsoft will now allow users of Windows XP to download Internet Explorer 7 without having to gain Windows Genuine Advantage authentication.
-There are conflicting statistics available on the popularity of the major Web browsers. For example, according to Web analysis site W3Schools?, Firefox has more market share than IE7?, with 34.5 percent and 20.1 percent respectively. However, according to Net Applications, Firefox 2.0 has 13.6 percent of market share, while IE7? has 34.6 percent. Both sites indicate that Firefox and IE7? are gaining market share, while Internet Explorer 6 is losing market share.

[Keith] This is a step in the right direction. Maybe MS learned from the Windows Update Secret update and said, we need to get people off IE6? for security reasons, so let's lower the barriers to migration. It could just be a ploy to regain browser market share, but I'm willing to give Microsoft a little trust here.

Microsoft gives OEMs? five more months to install XP

-Microsoft had planned to stop selling XP through OEMs? and retailers on Jan. 31, 2008, while custom system builders have until Jan. 31, 2009, to pre-install XP on machines. But because sales of Vista PCs? have not been as strong as expected, OEMs? and retailers have asked Microsoft to extend XP's availability. OEMs? and retailers will now have until June 30, 2008, to sell PCs? with Vista preinstalled on machines, Microsoft said. Retailers also can sell XP out of the box until that time if they choose, the company said.

[Keith] Bad news for MS. Vista has just not been well recieved.

-So, here is my thought. I have a DR site I can replicate my DB's to. I'm going to take snapshots of my production systems and put them in a VM environment at my DR site.
-Replicate DB's and if/when the need arises, I bring the VM's up and restore the replicated DB's.
-Not sure if I will leave the VM's dormant or active. if I do active, I can do a direct replication between systems.
