[Steve]
*It is good to be back!

[Rich]
*Belkin Mobile Router kit

[Keith]
*I'm grumpy. I'm trying to lose weight, so I'm cutting back and watching what I eat. It tends to put me in a bad mood.

*Last show, you guys were discussing web browsers and the suggestion came up that Microsoft should release IE for Linux. For those that don't want to wait (I know you're out there!), there is a guy who put together a script to get various versions of IE to install on Linux and run under Wine.

Ballmer claims Red Hat violates Microsoft IP

-"People who use Red Hat, at least with respect to our intellectual property, in a sense have an obligation eventually to compensate us," Ballmer stated
-...Red Hat reiterated its position that its customers are protected from liability by its Open Source Assurance Program, which includes “indemnification against claims raised by any holder of software patents.
-If Microsoft really believes Linux violates its patents, it should sue, but that by doing so, it’d be suing its own customers because many use both Microsoft and Linux in their IT systems.

[Keith]

  • This guy is a &@!^!&. I honestly think that he is more of a liability to Microsoft than anything else.
  • If you believe they violate, sue them. Don't pull this bull@&$ FUD thing.
  • Know why they don't sue the customers? As mentioned in the article, they'd be sueing their customers of Windows.
  • Here's my thought; I believe you can consider I paid my "royalties" when I paid your over-inflated price for that piece of junk you call Windows. If, in fact, they are using your IP in this or any other Linux distro....at least they are applying it well. You could learn a thing or two from them Vista-boy.

Daylight-saving time issue reappears on IT radar

-On Nov. 4, clocks will “fall back” to standard time, but companies with systems that are not patched will fall back a week early throwing off calendars, transaction systems and anything that relies on clock time for accuracy and execution.
-Daylight-saving time (DST) comes to a close one week later this year – Nov. 4 instead of Oct. 28 – as part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005.

[Keith]

  • It's back! Just a heads up that this is back on the radar.

Social engineering social networking services: a LinkedIn example

[Keith]

  • Interesting concept for utilizing social networks to manipulate people.
  • Many possibilities to get competitive information, contact & customer lists, etc.
  • It's interesting to think that it probably benefits you to create a presence on all of these sites before someone else has the opportunity to do so.
  • As we mentioned in Episode 13 on Code of Ethics, I Googled candidates to get a sense of their character. If someone creates a bogus profile of you as a joke or maliciously, those things can affect you and they are hard to get rid of as well.

  • Iomega NAS Drives
-Last week, I was unable to join in the podcast because I was rebuilding a failed Iomega NAS drive.
-My points of frustration with these drives are:
1) The drives are standard IDE drives in a carrier and replacements are sold for $550 ea
2) The RAIDed? drives are a software raid based on Windows Dynamic Disks
3) You cannot get replacement OS drives from Iomega.

  • Sprint online Support
-I was having problems with my Sprint phone. So I found it easiest to connected using an IM client integrated with their website. It was interesting that after our communication ended I was emailed a copy of the transcript. NICE. I then followed her advice and called phone support which fixed one problem with my online bill paying. But then he gave me a know to call to get sprint blackberry support. Which I called and kept getting dropped. I called the original number back and was able to navigate to sprint blackberry support. While on the phone with the tech he kept asking me do I know how to do this or that. I'm like thinking no I called you to walk me through the steps. But by that time I had realized even though the event that happened to make my phone malfunction was external the problem now was with a setting on my phone. I probably could have figured that out myself after all.
