  • Quick note on Techpodcast and Blubrry networks. Both are committed to child friendly content. In fact, they recently dropped two podcasts that consistently broke the rules. Not that children would necessarily be interested in our content, but if you are like me you listen in the car with your kids there, and cringe when someone drops an F-Bomb. So, if you want to search for podcasts and be confident the content is still safe for little ears, search Blubrry and Techpodcasts networks.
  • Speaking of Techpodcasts and Blubrry networks, you will start to hear more promos from other podcasts in the networks. On a recent member poll, I suggested cross-promoting be more common and to that end, I'll start by promoting other tech-related podcasts if they have a promo available. I'm not launching an infomercial, just adding one or two to a show.
  • Don't forget to enter the contest. If you missed the last show, we are running a contest and you could win a USB thumb drive or possibly a $25 gift card to a store of your choice. All you need to do is post a review on iTunes or any other review site. Take a screenshot of the review and send it along to Contest [at] acoupleofadmins.com by November 30th, 2007.

Rich's Topics

  • Dos is not Dead
-DOS lives! Secrets of the Windows command prompt
-To people that are used to using DOS, DOS has never died. It is still easier to do repetitive tasks using dos in batch files.
  • Netflix
-Recently joined netflix. I think it makes sense for me so far.
-I like that I can stream a few hours of video to my laptop each month. this should work well for when I am traveling.
  • FACTA -- LAW in full force since Dec. 1 2006
-Truncate Credit Card Numbers showing 5 or less
-Remove expiration date
- PCI and other civil rules have been looked at closely. But many have missed the FACTA law. Thats right LAW. There is now a Witch hunt on to punish all those who have not complied.
-If you look at what has been going on... many if not all business have been trying to comply
-I think there may be a misconception to, because of the PCI and other rules enacted by the credit card community that if you are a small Mom and Pop shop these things don't apply. Well in the fact that this is a law that is not true. it applies to anyone accepting credit card information electronically.
-Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act amendment to the Fair Credit Reporting Act
-These laws also effect how you dispose of "personal information" whether it be employee or customer.
- I'm not a legal scholar nor to I pretend to be. I just wanted it noted that everyone may want to review this information on their own and if necessary seek legal advise.
-I like HP's inovation
-

Keith's Topics

  • SQL Server
-Asset Management Project working with consultant to design and integrate into our existing systems and he needs to understand the schema from one of our systems. Tried to generate an ERD within SQL Enterprise manager, but with 600+ tables, it's not very good.
-SQLSpec? tool (see link) maps it out and builds HTML pages which interlink showing relationships, etc.
-
-While searching for an ERD generating tool, I found this open-source diagram package. It's very simple and small and can run from a thumb drive.
-I had seen this years ago, but it is much more polished now. It comes with a ton of pre-built shapes (like Visio) but is free.
-It's basically a forensics tool, but I use it with my pain-in-the-butt Verizon phone to get pictures off, etc. I haven't been able to crack the media directory to put my own ringtones, but that's more a matter of time since I know the tools are out there to Seem the phone.
-Steve will probably strangle me for throwing forensic tools out there like this, but that's just one of the uses.
  • ISP problems
-Inherited contract. Pricey, but everything runs off it and it covers leased HA firewalls, etc.
-What I'm paying per month could buy new equipment these days. I call to negotiate and they sigh and completely miss the point. They think I want newer firewall hardware because I told them I could buy newer more powerful stuff for the cost of our monthly contract.
-I'll be taking on that migration sooner than I expected.
