Chit-Chat - What's going on with you?
[Steve]

- Have you guys seen where the old Sesame Street shows were released and labeled for adults-only? They say they aren't good for today's pre-school children. I got a copy and isolated a couple of the clips.....take a listen.

- I spoke about BitPim? last week and that I used it for pulling pix off my phone since Verizon cripples it. I neglected to mention that the reason I used it recently was to get the pic I used for the album artwork on Episode 23. It's a poster in my daughter's school of Bill Gates promoting reading. Ironically, the put a computer touch on it by putting a drop-down menu....and the menu font is the classic Apple font. I just thought it was ironic.
- Update on the feedback contest. If you enter right now, your odds are very good to win. We have three prizes to give away and we've had three entries. So, you're looking at decent odds if you enter soon.
Listener Feedback

- Online Identity Hoax Kills [Rich]
-Mom: Web Hoax Led Girl to Kill Herself
By BETSY TAYLOR, Associated Press Writer
- Basically, an Adult and a couple of teens setup a fictious profile and lead the young girl to believe she had an online friend. This young girl already had mental issues. They then went and had this fictious character breakup with the youngster. It seems as if this action lead to her committing suicide.
- Single Packet Authorization [Steve]
-fwknop stands for the "
FireWall? KNock? OPerator?", and implements an authorization scheme called Single Packet Authorization (SPA).
-It is similar to port-knocking, with some security advantages. You can hide/deny access to your remote management services from all but those who are authorized. The client software can run on Linux/Mac/Windows.
- Networking Utilities all by Carsten Schmidt [Keith]
-FDBGET - little app that will download the MAC Address Table from a network device. Provide the IP and SNMP Read string and it will pull it down. You can save the table or search it. Not bad if you are tracing down a problematic PC and you want to know which switch-port it is plugged into. Side note: if you want the MAC address of a system remotely, you can: simply ping it and check your ARP table (arp -a) but this only works if it is on the same subnet. Otherwise, check DHCP registration. Or, if it is most likely a Windows host, you can run NBTSTAT -A {IP} and in the
NetBios? interrogation, it will give you the MAC address.
-
MultiPing? - Graph up to ten hosts simultaneously. Nice to see where latency in remote routes as you can ping hosts all along the route. I know, traceroute would do the same, but this is much prettier.
-Interface Traffic Indicator - Nice little SNMP traffic grapher. Only does one interface at a time but useful for troubleshooting and learning about your network performance.
-Best thing, they all run stand-alone so you can put them on your thumb drive.
- Microsoft's Bill Hilf Reveals Its Open Source Strategy [Steve]
By J. Nicholas Hoover, Information Week
-the real value of open source from Microsoft is understanding how community developed software can happen on our platform and help grow our business as well as the open source community.
-Turning to the product that we're releasing, we said what do people really like about Linux servers, what do they really like about Unix servers? They like having a modular system that has a small footprint. They like having a great command line environment that allows a power user to do a lot of scripting and command line things that are not UI-based. That's what we built [Windows Server 2008] with Server Core and
PowerShell and new technologies that support PHP better in IIS 7 [Internet Information Services]. For us, it's not a religion, there's literally feature requests from customers showing up in some of our competitive products, we said great, people want this stuff.
-Classically, our preferred plan is to license our technology in a very proactive and productive way versus litigate.
-So basically, MS wants the benefits of open source, and the ability to charge competing companies a licensing charge.
- Windows 7 Most Requested Features [Keith]
-Windows Early Feedback Program
-I love Feedback ID entry 276001 - Include Pinball into next version of Windows
-I like entry 246591 - IE direct download - do not download to a temp folder. If you've ever downloaded an ISO, this will drive you nuts.

PowerShell Cookbook on the blog.

- New Antivirus Software for Playstation 3 [Rich]
By JORDAN ROBERTSON, AP Technology Writer
-"The company (Trend Micro) says video game players are increasingly vulnerable to Web attacks as they use their consoles for more than just gaming. It vows the new software will make
PS3? users feel safer browsing the Internet."
-
- MST3K? Returning....Sorta [Keith]
-Joel Hodgson, the creator of
MST3K? is working on a revival of the concept with many of the original writers (except Mike Nelson)
-I LOVED this show. I can't help myself but do the same thing when something lame is on. Just ask my wife how I act whenever she watches her soap operas.
- Study: Internet could run out of capacity in two years [Steve]
By Grant Gross, IDG News Service
-Consumer and corporate use of the Internet could overload the current capacity and lead to brown-outs in two years unless backbone providers invest billions of dollars in new infrastructure, according to a study released Monday.
-U.S. lawmakers can also help in several ways, he said. For example, the U.S. Congress could require that home contractors who receive government assistance for building affordable housing include broadband connections in their houses, he said. Congress could also provide tax credits to help broadband providers add more capacity, he said.
-Consumers also pay high taxes for telecommunication services, averaging about 13 percent on some telecom services, similar to the tax rate on tobacco and alcohol, Mehlman said. One tax on telecom service has remained in place since the 1898 Spanish-American War, when few U.S. residents had telephones, he noted.
-"We think it's a mistake to treat telecom like a luxury and tax it like a sin," he said.
-Going mobile to our field personnel with some applications and I got a Sprint EVDO card for testing. I got the one with the GPS receiver in it as well to see if it would be useful to the field personnel (one less device).
-Played around with the following apps.
EasyGPS? did not work with my built-in receiver, but it looks pretty cool. Their website also has a Geocaching app called
GeoBuddy? which will pull up Geocaches in your area and topographical maps.
- Apple should buy Nintendo [Keith]
-Reminded me of my theory when I saw rumors of Google buying Sprint/Nextel.
-Set top box theory. Wii fit.
-iTunes and new media delivery and the need to tie it all together.
