Chit-Chat - What's going on with you?
[Steve]
- It's been a busy day. I've been hip deep in SQL queries, trying to get some data straightened out for this new year.
[Rich]
[Keith]
- First day back to work. Everything survived the holidays just fine.
Housekeeping Items

[Steve]
[Keith]
- Downloaded PolyMon and have started tinkering with it.

-Not sure if I had mentioned this before. I ordered 7 PC's on 10/18 and just got them before Christmas. TWO months.
-I can safely say they are off my short list to order from in the future.
-Query Analyzer meets Linq.
-Linq stands for Language Integrated Query, which is an extension to the .NET framework for querying data sources, like objects, xml, and databases.
-
LinqPad? is a free tool to encourage the learning of Linq. There are a number of examples provided with the code.
-SQL querying is also supported.
-Quick aside - I have a large number of sql queries in text files with .sql extensions.
LinqPad? saves files with a .linq extension, along with some connection information in an xml header to the file. To quickly transform my files, I used Powershell.
$header = (get-content ./samplefile.linq)[0..11]
Get-childitem *.sql | Rename-Item -
NewName {$_.name -replace ".sql$",".linq"}
Get-childitem *.linq | foreach-object {$temp = get-content -Path $_.name; Set-Content -Path $_.name -Value ($header + $temp)}
-Bought AMD 64 X2 PC for $200 at computer show
-Cannot believe I'm having this much trouble
- LOPSA-Madison Meeting [STEVE]
-Topic: Application Buffer-Cache Management for Performance: Running the World's Largest MRTG
-The meeting is tomorrow. I'll check it out and report back next show.
- Dearly Departed: Companies and Products That Didn't Deserve to Die Lynn Greiner, CIO Magazine [KEITH]
-Interesting the memories that get dredged up when you read this.
-I had forgotten all about Taligent - JV between Apple & IBM back in early nineties.
- Digital TV - Governemnt Offers TV Coupons [RICH]
-Get coupon for $40.00 X 2

- Data Center Safety [KEITH]
-Lifting & Ergonomics
-Follow best practices when lifting something heavy and ask for help if you need it.
-DC furniture is not always the most comfortable and ergonomic. If you can so it from a more comfortable desk, do so.
-Electrical Safety
-Remove rings and watches and anything that may dangle (necklaces, bracelets)
-Disconnect power before servicing a system. I know it's a pain, but is it worth your life?
-Follow proper guidelines when distributing power. Don't overload a circuit or a UPS. Be mindful when routing through cabinets and furniture that could cut or score a power cable. (Punch-outs can leave rough edges)
-Fire Suppression Systems
-Know what kind of system you have in place and the impact of being in the room when activated.
-Environmental
-Respiratory (zinc Whiskers, handling PCB components, etc.)
-Noise
-Trip Hazards (cables & cords, etc) or tile removed from raised floor
-Weight Distribution - Our offices are in an old building. My predecessor had to have the floor reinforced when a rack was installed because of the concentration of weight in that area.
-Ensure racks properly secured to floor to prevent shifting weight and tipping racks.
-Lastly, some non-DC stuff
-Cell Phone - If you talk on the cell while driving, get a hands-free. Better yet, park and talk. I did this for conference calls, etc where I knew I would be focusing more on the conversation than the road.
-Stress - We've harped on this before. Find a way to relieve the stress. While my current job is lot simpler than my former, I always make it a point to leave the office for lunch. I don't bring it back where I can be interrupted at my desk. Many times, I'll eat in the car and listen to podcasts. Just removing yourself from the environment has positive results.
-Some DC Policy & Procedure docs I found online:
