  • Top-10 Application-Design Mistakes [STEVE]
-1. Non-Standard GUI Controls
-2. Inconsistency
-3. No Perceived Affordance
-4. No Feedback
-5. Bad Error Messages
-6. Asking for the Same Info Twice
-7. No Default Values
-8. Dumping Users into the App
-9. Not Indicating How Info Will Be Used
-10. System-Centric Features
  • BackupExec? 11d and Exchange Mailbox Restoration [KEITH]
-Default in 11d is to backup entire Information Store. Even though I had checked option to allow restore of individual mailboxes, it wasn't backup up all mailboxes and I received no errors.
-There is an option in BackupExec? to "Enable Legacy Mailbox Support" which is listed as 'Not Recommended'. Once you check this, you can see the mailboxes individually and select them for backup.
-Symantec article ID's: 285797, 285753, 266074, 231250
-After making change, all mailboxes I selected were backed up and I could restore them individually.
-Of course, 2 hours before we start recording, I get an email from Symantec announcing v.12 of BackupExec? is released.

  • Drive Erase Utilities [KEITH]
-Co-Worker is giving his old PC to another guy and wanted to know how to securely purge the system. I usually recommend the IBM Secure Data Disposal but it requires a floppy drive, so I went looking to a CD-based utility (rather than build my own with IBM's app). Sure enough, I found Darik's Boot and Nuke and it should fit the need quite nicely.
-Darik's Boot and Nuke and IBM Secure Data Disposal
  • The Scripting Games [STEVE]
-Microsoft's Scripting Guys are hosting a scripting contest... It's already started, but you can join at any time. Events have a completion time frame and answers are posted after that run
-There are Beginner and Advanced divisions and you can use three languages, VBScript, PowerShell, and Perl.
  • Odd Updates in WSUS 3 [KEITH]
-Four (4) updates like this in WSUS: DU-Only: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows Server 2003 (KB944533?)
-Could only find a reference on a German WSUS message board.
-These are dynamic updates which will install as part of the IE 7 installation.

When installing IE 7 it will look for those DU updates and install them so IE 7 comes up more secure and also the customer will go through fewer reboots.

-So, if you are pushing IE7? to a new machine, it supposedly will hit the WSUS server, find these updates and dynamically apply.

  • What's your call? - Leave computer on or shut it down? [KEITH]
-Keep this brief.
-I am always curious what other computer professionals advise and I never thought to ask this. What do you tell people who ask you this?

Listener Feedback

From listener....Anonymous in the Baltimore, MD area who posted a comment on the blog

Jesus guys….why does it take you all 10 mins or more sometimes to get to the meat of your podcast. If this were TV, most folks would’ve probably rolled on to something else. Maybe they’re doing that already…..my patience is wearing thin with shows like this.

[KEITH] I think the listener here is absolutely right. I think it's time Anonymous moved on and produced their own podcast or just found another show. They obviously believe they can do it much better than us, so we look forward to listening. Believe me Anonymous when I say that losing just one listener is statistically significant for our numbers, so this isn't cockiness. It is, however, sincerely my opinion that we try and that is the best we can do. I think we are in the minority as a podcast that has zero advertisements and never begs for a single dime to a "tip jar" or some PayPal? subscription. We keep it family friendly, try to have a little fun, and really do try to learn and share knowledge with the community. We do this because we like to do it and we did it when there were 2 listeners. Same reason we dip into our own pockets to come up with prizes. We are not professionals, nor do we claim to be. We developed this show format through our experience with listening to many other shows and I don't think we are out of line with our format. So, I have often wondered whether the ANN and other longer silly segments should be a seperate feed, so I intend to do that. I think it will help the overall show length as well. We will, however, continue to play TPN and Blubrry spots as well as promos from fellow network members. We are obligated on network spots as part of membership (but I don't mind at all) and the fellow members deserve the opportunity as far as I'm concerned. Nuff said.

Keith - http://cmu.blip.tv/file/461472/ Dr. Randy Pausch delivers the previously hypothetical 'Last Lecture'. I'm sure this has been out there for a while, but I just found it recently. Phenomenal video and really got to me. If you've never seen Steve Jobs 2005 Commencement address at Stanford, it is quite good as well. Dr. Pausch is a Comp Sci Prof at Carnegie Mellon University and you can check out he primary project 'Alice' at http://www.alice.org/. Alice is a 3D programming environment for high school and college students.
