  • I posted last week to the blog that I have released the first version of a PowerShell snap-in for PolyMon, an open source systems monitoring solution that we have discussed on the show. I have joined the project and hope to expand the PowerShell support the product enjoys.
  • Also, I quickly wanted to mention that I made it to the local Microsoft 2008 Launch event. If you have an opportunity to go, it is a great experience, even if they did not have wifi available. :(

-Re-introduce Greg Shields

'+Vista Soapbox Discussion

-Greg, a few weeks ago we brought up one of your QuickTip? columns from MCP Magazine. Could you give us the gist of the article and maybe tell us a bit about the reactions to it? Was the reaction what you expected?
-You also wrote a follow up article New Article Breaking - Three Vista Myths
-XP is Better Because XP is Faster
-Vista Causes Application Conflicts
-Vista Provides No Compelling Features to Drive an Upgrade

[STEVE - Previous commentary]

  • Article points
-Vista requires excessive hardware that I don't have.
-My applications don't work with Vista.
-There are no drivers for Vista.
-Vista is slower than XP.
-Vista will break my network.
-Vista is buggy and will cause more trouble than it's worth.
-In Greg's quick tip column, he lists out a number of reasons that admins he talks to haven't switched to Vista and are showing a reluctance to consider switching.
-For the most part, I agree with his assessment. The number of issues that have been hindered Vista's adoption have declined and will continue as the OS matures.
-I did take issue with one aspect of his assessment though.
-"In my small office here, we installed Vista early on and never looked back. Yes, there were some applications like Quickbooks that didn't work. But for those, we simply moved them to a Terminal Server and made them remote applications. The movement of applications from desktops to Terminal Servers actually made our lives easier with fewer apps to manage across the network. Vista has, in many ways been a boon, to Terminal Services."
-It should not be seen as a positive that an application will not run on the OS. It could be the fault of the vendor of the program, but that doesn't make it a positive for the OS. Also, some small environments that run Quickbooks or other non-compatible programs do not have the luxury of a terminal services machine or the licensing to use one.
