- Excellent job on the Greg Shields Interview/discussion last week. I really wanted to be there, but I had a viewing for a friends father that passed away and the only night we could re-schedule was my daughters Parent/Teacher conference. You did a great job though and I just wanted to say thanks.

- Microsoft Service Packs Progress [STEVE]
-Windows Vista
SP1? - Now available via automatic update.
-Windows XP
SP3? - RTM (Released to Manufacturing)
-I bought a small batch of Gateway PC's (just as the Micron deal was announced). I've put them in place and I'm having some odd issues where the screen goes blank. It's happened on two so far. So, I went through updating drivers and there was a new BIOS firmware available.
-I downloaded the firmware and it includes the files for a bootable floppy and an ISO for burning a 1MB CD.....sorry, no floppy in the PC's and the CD would just be wasteful. So, I figured I'll make one of my little USB thumb drives bootable. I found the USB Storage Format Utility and it works great. You can point it to the system files to use to make it bootable (in this case they were included in the zip download for the BIOS)
-For the heck of it, I tried the
BartPE? disk, but the update util wouldn't run under Windows. I'm going to keep it bootable and dedicate it to tasks like this.
-The linked site also has some other freeware utilities and a bootable DOS CD builder. I like the UBCD project for those though.
- VB6? Support About to Disappear [STEVE]
- by John K. Waters
-On April 8, Microsoft will cease its support of the
VB6? IDE.
-In fact, Microsoft intends to support the
VB6? runtime for the full lifetime of Windows Vista -- five years of mainstream support followed by five years of extended support -- and will continue to support the runtime on Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 for the support lifetime of those operating systems.
-
TicketDesk? is efficient and designed to do only one thing, facilitate communications between help desk staff and end users. The overriding design goal is to be as simple and frictionless for both users and help desk staff as is possible.
-
TicketDesk? is a pretty basic platform under active development. I've adopted it in my environment because it's free and based on .NET. I joined the project because I want to help extend the functionality. I'm working on a more configurable email notification system and an RSS notification system.
-Do you know when you would see this IP in use? I hadn't really thought about this until I was doing some troubleshooting with
TCPView? and it popped up.
-This IP is the one typically handed back by a DNS Blacklist server when the domain being looked up is on the blacklist. It tells the DNSRBL software it is a black-listed domain.
-Now, 127.0.0.2 is a loopback address, and depending on your OS it will answer a ping. Some OS implementations will only respond to 127.0.0.1/32, others answer the entire /8 (My XP
SP3? workstation does), and some answer 127.0.0.0/x where x is the CIDR subnet of the real IP on the interface.
- I'm always glad when I dodge a bullet [KEITH]
-On 4/15 Microsoft released
KB949810? the Office Genuine Advantage "patch" through WSUS. It was not supposed to be released outside of a few test countries and has been causing problems at several locations falsely prompting that Office installs were not genuine.
-Since this was after the 4/8 patch cycle, I hadn't gotten back to WSUS to review anything new yet and didn't approve it. I would have. I'm confident my Office licenses are valid, and if by any chance they weren't, I would want to know so I could remediate.
-I got burned by the 'Desktop Search' patch, so I'm glad I avoided this one.
- Guerrilla IT: How to stop worrying and learn to love your superusers [STEVE]
-"Eighty percent of enterprise IT functions are being duplicated by folks outside of the IT department"
-"The reason superusers go rogue is usually frustration, says Marquis."
-How do you enable your users? I like finding people who have an aptitude or interest in a particular area and making them an "official" assistant for the part of the project.

Listener Feedback
From listener....Brad Call who posted a comment on the blog
I use to be one of those Vista haters, but around Christmas I bought a new system with Vista preloaded (knowing that being IT professional I’d have to learn it)and gave it a second change. Now that it is running on the proper hardware I’m quite happy with it, though it will still be a long time before the school board that I work for will make the switch as less than 10% of the system in the district have the proper specs. (good thing for Enterprise licensing of XP)

RE: Forcing Windows Updates through PowerShell
Thats just resetting the client and doing a re-detect. If you really want to automate the patching from a WSUS server, check this out. (And its powershell)

It should still be on my front page.

Keith - http://www.swiftappraisal.com/index.html Interesting concept where you can treat your domain like real property and get an appraisal. Which reminds me. MindOfRoot.com was appraised at $7k to $10k. So....this is a little awkward, but ah you guys need to kick in a little cash if you want a piece of the deal.
