[Keith] Welcome to the Mind Of Root. I'm Keith Albright
[Keith] This is Episode 50 recorded on Tuesday April 29, 2008.
Chit-Chat - What's going on with you?
[Keith]
- Promoted my first Win2K3? Domain Controller today. I have to build the next one then start sorting out the FSMO roles and moving them.
- Moving Symantec Mail Sec for SMTP. No easy way to move settings. You can cluster and sync between mail scanners, but my control center on each one won't see the scanner on the other. So, I can't get them to sync and may need to do it manually.
Housekeeping Items
[Keith]
- Farewell to Technorama. I'm not sure if this is a joke since those guys might pull something like this. Especially when they had so much going on recently. But, I can understand their statement that family comes first. I'll miss that show and look forward to any special episodes they might drop in the feed. I wonder if Kreg Steppe will get active again on Valid Syntax. It was nice of them to give Steve props for his PowerShell Basics podcast as well. Since Steve isn't here, I'll throw out a 'Thank You' on his behalf.
- Logo Contest. I am pleased to announce we are having a logo contest. With the new name, we need a new logo. The logo we are currently using is just something I threw together. The only restriction is that it needs to be sizable for cover art, etc. without getting distorted.
First prize is a full retail copy of Microsoft Office 2007 Standard [OR] $25 US (roughly 1/3 of a candy bar in the rest of the world once you do the currency conversion). Your choice.
Send your entries to contest [at] mindofroot.com by June 30th, 2008. Enter as often as you like. One entry will be chosen on July 1st, 2008 and announced on the next recorded show.

- Microsoft Pulls Vista SP1? and delays XP SP 3
-According to the story, incompatibilities were found between
XPSP3? and the MS Dynamics Retail Management Software which caused data corruption. I'm guessing they believe the same issue exists in Vista
SP1?.
-I think they deserve credit for pulling this and stopping it from causing "wide-spread" problems (if Dynamics retail is that wide spread). But on the other hand, what if it were
QuickBooks?? Would they put the brakes on that quickly?
-You can still download the stand-alone installer (Build 5512) from their web site. Also, they have just made a slipstream version of the XP installation CD with
SP3? available as an ISO download for MSDN and
TechNet? Plus subscribers. I guess Microsoft finally downloaded a beta copy of nLite.
-Started some consulting work. Staging a couple Lenovo T61 laptops and wanted to make an image. Found the UBCD I had (Awesome one Rich made) is getting a little dated and didn't support the SATA controller on the T61.
-I was already in the process of making a new one at work with all the Compaq
SmartArray? controller drivers since I couldn't use it on one of my servers a couple weeks ago when the DC wouldn't start and MS knowledgebase indicated to change a reg key related to
NetBIOS?.
-The download of the UBCD builder app includes a bunch of pre-made plugins for free/open source apps. Can you recommend any sites for more like that or any tips on how to search for them?
-Do you have any routines/standards when you stage a server?
-I had formal documentation at my old job and I follow them still (with some minor variations given the new environment), but the checklist works well in remembering everything.
-Here is a quick synopsis of my checklist for a Windows2003 server:
-Install NOS. Leave in Workgroup.
-Install recovery console (D:\i386\winnt32 /cmdcons)
-Create Support Folder - Copy i386, R2, Drivers, Major Service Packs, etc into this folder structure. I later add application patches, updates, utilities, etc. as encountered.
-Install/update Windows drivers
-Stop/disables unnecessary services (Wireless configuration, print spooler, messengnger, Internet Connections Sharing, IPSEC services, etc.)
-Set Audit setting in Local Security Policy
-Set Event Log File settings (30MB, overwrite as needed)
-Configure Network
-Install all Service Packs and updates
-Install Adminpak.msi
-Join Domain
-Install any Mgmt software (RAID Controller utilities, etc) Sometimes already loaded with drivers, but can wait until here.
- Microsoft Shifting Strategy to Drive Into Organizations?
-I was listening to an interview on Windows Weekly with Mary Jo Foley, author of Microsoft 2.0 and they were baffled by Microsoft's apparent shift toward targeting the home user with their products.
-Given the trend of consumerization of IT, this doesn't surprise me. I think they are following the lead of other technologies that target the home user who then pushes for it at work. What do you think?
-Is it just a bleed over from their other consumer businesses (Zune,
XBox, etc) that is affecting the enterprise stuff?

Keith - http://instruct1.cit.cornell.edu/courses/ee476/FinalProjects/#s2008 Cool site that showcases the final projects done by Cornell ECE (Electrical and Computer Engineering) students using microcontrollers . They have the projects going back to 1999.
http://myoldmac.net/ This one is a cool way-back site for old Macintoshes. They even have a flash-based System 7 emulator.
