[Keith] Welcome to the Mind Of Root. I'm Keith Albright

[Keith] This is Episode 52 recorded on May 20th, 2008.

Chit-Chat - What's going on with you?

[Keith]

  • I was up at West Point Military Academy over the weekend. I couldn't talk about before I went as it was a surprise coming home party for a friend who was overseas. His wife arranged for a bunch of the couples in Pleasantville to come to the party and we rented a block of rooms in the hotel.

  • Group Policy Problems
-Following my AD migration to new servers (still in progress for DHCP, DNS, etc.) I got a couple calls from users that they couldn't access the web. I found it was due to lack of proxy setting for them...which I hand out via GP.
-Couple tools to help you in troubleshooting these things.
-GPMC - Group Policy Management Console - Tool from Microsoft.
-Run GPRESULT /z on the client - extremely verbose and give the RSOP and which policies have been applied.
-Run GPUPDATE /FORCE to force a connection to the DC and apply the group policies.
-You can also run these remotely, however, the GPRESULT wants the credentials of the user to check the RSOP of that user logging in.
  • Level 3 Customer Service
-Follow-up on my earlier rant on Level 3's customer service. Last Thursday I get a call from a woman who introduces herself as my new rep and could she confirm my info and discuss my services. I startle her by asking.."Don't you know?...I ordered a disconnect 50+ days ago. I'm no longer a customer. She apologizes and asks if we can salvage the relationship. I give her the run-down on my experience with my former rep (or lack of any good experience) and she apologizes and is still hopeful they can keep the business. I felt bad for her and told her straight up that Level 3 would not make it to my short list anytime in the future. I was polite and told her to send me her contact info, but nothing would ever come from it.

  • L Root Server IP change
-Oddly, this is not something updated by Microsoft in their DNS implementations. So, you will need to manually change your DNS root hints for the L server to point to the new IP address.
-The old address stopped responding to requests as of May 1, 2008.
-The blog entry linked to Renesys.com is very interesting in how they detail that someone is still listening on that address and serving up legitimate information. The question is, what if they change that and redirecting queries to bad sites. Trust YOURBANK.COM? What if that legitimate query sends you to a server hosting a credential farming site. Your address bar would look fine. Would the new Anti-Phishing features still catch it? Maybe the lack of a certificate would raise a question. If you thought to make sure you were using an SSL session.
  • Microsoft to block AMD-based PC's from receiving SP3?
-Nothing evil. They are putting a filter in place to prevent machines susceptible to the endless reboot problem from receiving the patch.
-I don't recall seeing this noted before, but the article indicates they did this as well for machines running their Dynamic Retail software when that problem arose.
-Lastly on the topic; a former Microsoft developer, Jesper Johansson, has posted a VB Script on his blog that fixes the problem (as well as some others). It must be run before SP3? is installed
