Steve's Topics

  • Using PolyMon to Monitor SQL Server
-I have to monitor server SQL Servers and there are a few things that are nice to keep tabs on.
-PolyMon has an example of this in the sample solutions and a good help file, but I found a few more stored procedures that are nice to monitor. I have to wrap them in a stored procedure that PolyMon can understand, but here they are:
-sp_databases - databases for current instance and sizes
-sp_statistics - indexes and stats for a given table
-sp_tables - all tables and views in current db

Keith's Topics

  • Thumb Drive Problems
-Boss had a problem copying file to thumb drive. Getting 'Error copying file or folder' Error copying ABC.TXT. The file or directory could not be created.
-Plenty of space on drive. I check SanDisk? website and they offer nothing. I search the web and find several people with similar and their problems stemmed from copying too many files at once (we were only copying one).
-I check the file system and find that it is FAT, so I check the limitations and find it's 512 files on the root directory. We are at 158 files.
-I see a couple of ~WRxxx?.TMP files from Microsoft Word that are ancient and figure I'll see if I can delete them. It works. I delete 2 or three then try to copy a doc to the drive. It works. So, the directory entry limit is the problem, but why?
-It turns out that under FAT, each file can consume multiple entries when long filenames are used. In fact, some long file names could consume 5 entries. As MS KB article states; Any file whose name contains more than 13 characters requires 3 or more directory entries.
-Since most of these were longer file names, it was over the 512 limit.
-Simple solution as well. Just move the files into a subdirectory where there is no limit.
  • Disney IT
-A lot of new wireless tablets there. I asked if they were connected and they indicated they were. I could not find access points. I know Disney is the master at concealing infrastructure to keep the experience, but I don't know how they accomplished it.
-Problems with my mag strip getting in the park one day. Once in, it didn't recognize me as in the park, so I couldn't do the fast pass deal. I knew they were connected, but I didn't realize how much it queries when making the call to issue the pass, etc.
-That is one network I'd like to check out. With that much traffic, they must really have there POS and other systems optimized and efficient. I've seen a lot of POS that use inefficient protocols and methods for communications. I wonder how much is home grown? I know Micros does some work for them with the Cruise Line. All the POS workstations were NCR.

  • Audio Books
-My wife had this idea. If you have young kids and a long car drive ahead of you, it works well.
-We used the MOR studio to record us reading a couple of our kids books and then packed them in the van (Gandalf). I put the MP3?'s on the iPod then we could play them and they could listen and read along.
