[Keith] Welcome to the Mind Of Root. I'm Keith Albright
[Rich] and I'm Rich Niemeier.
[Keith] This is Episode 56 recorded on June 24, 2008.
Chit-Chat - What's going on with you?
[Steve]
[Rich]
- I need a new laptop battery, I was told I'd have to wait. Why you might ask? because of the earth quake in China. Hey, no problem. I'm sure my problems are minor compared to that.

- Steve's SysAdmin?/Scripting Meme is still running like gang-busters. Paul Sylvester over at "If you've got the ink, I've got the link" blog has put the call out to some heady people in the industry (Leo Laporte, Bill Gates, etc) and I will be interested to see if he gets a response. I do want to clarify that Steve is the one who started this. I've seen a couple people run with my name as the originator, and I just want to see proper credit given.
- Last chance for logo submissions. Get'em in before June 30th.
- Frappr map reminder. We've gotten a lot more listeners over the past couple months but I haven't seen any Frappr map postings. I'd love to see where everyone is that's listening. It's just really cool to me that there are people all over the world listening. I will probably never get to travel to where you live, so just the little bit of interaction is cool.

- Exchange 2007 Transition [KEITH]
-I'm starting my Exchange 2007 transition. Note I didn't say migration. MS clarifies that a transition is a parallel install and move of Exchange data within the same Exchange organization whereas a migration is from a non-Exchange or existing Exchange organization system to a brand new Exchange 2007 organization. You cannot do an in-place upgrade.
-I found two interesting things with the use of
PowerShell and Exchange 2007. First, I had to install it prior to running the install of Exchange. I had to run 4 cmdlets to prep the AD Schema and entries for the software.
- After install, I've been having some problems with the names of some old objects that 2007 doesn't like. It gives me an error with the cmdlet to run to fix it. So, I launch
PowerShell and it says cmdlet is unknown (Set-
AddressList? -identity "\Public Folders" -
ForceUpgrade?). I look in the Start Menu and there is an Exchange Management Shell. I open it and it recognizes the cmdlet. Why not universal?
[Steve] - It can be universal, but by default your PowerShell session will not load "extra" snap-ins (how cmdlets and providers are added to PowerShell). Get-PSSnapIn? -registered will show you what snap-ins are available. Add-PSSnapIn? "snap-in name" will add that snap-ins functionality to your "normal" PowerShell session.
-The cmdlet ran successfully but did not correct the problem. The Management Console still gives me the same error and directs me to run that cmdlet.
- Could I, Should I, Would I, Wi-Fi on airplanes? [RICH]
- electronista 06/24/2008, 12:45pm, EDT
-Most of my flights aren't long enough but. Could I, Would I, Should I?
-Given the possiblity of utilizing Wi-Fi on an airplane flight, for arguments sake says 2+ hour flight, would we, should we?
- First impression is I like it, second impression is I don't. My laptop is to big. If the person next to me going to race to see who can occupy the space first?
- MokaFive? Application Virtualization '[KEITH]
-I'm playing with this now. What is cool is that you can create
LivePC?'s that will run on Mac and PC. Downside, you need
VMWare Fusion on Mac to work. Huh?
-Cool feature, install to USB drive. Not just the player, but the creator app as well. Maybe not, it bashed my Portable Apps drive over the head and took over the autorun, etc.

- Bring Your Own Laptop From Ed M. [KEITH]
-Microsoft has apparently tried this model. They give you an allowance toward a laptop and you buy what you want. You have to make up the difference in the cost for more features. Layer on application virtualization and you have either a corporate VM or virtual apps running on the laptop isolated from the host OS.
-I see a couple problems with this:
-Who owns it?
-Who owns the data? I guess they assume it is all in the cloud.
-Application virtualization should address many of the support concerns, but where is the line drawn? Can and should they be able to support the varieties of hardware. Most level 1 service centers report difficulty keeping up with a static environment, what will this do?
-Software licensing? I guess MS has no problems there. Does your volume licensing still apply? If you virtualize the OS, don't you end up paying twice?
-Cross platform support? What if the laptop I want to buy is a Mac? Do I have to run
VMWare/Parallels and then a virtual app on top? The possibilities are VIRTUALLY limitless ;>)
-What about usage restrictions? Can you surf porn at home on it? If it comes in the office, and they find it, is it a problem?
-What about hardware vendor economies? Hardware procurement nightmares for the vendor and you.
-Employee turnover? What happens when that employee leaves? What if they leave after 2 weeks? Who owns it?
-I don't mean to sound completely negative on the topic, it definitely has some positives. I guess I think it is best to separate work and private life in some ways. This would be one of them. I think the complexities of managing something like this outweigh the employee "benefits".
