Chit-Chat - What's going on with you?

[Steve]

[Rich]

[Keith]

  • Steve couldn't be with us tonight. He's stuck at work.

Housekeeping Items

[Keith]

  • I had hoped to announce a winner for the logo contest, but we need to get Steve and Rich's votes. Given that they are not available, we'll have to push that back to next weeks show.

-Exchange 2007 migration. Moving a couple mailboxes
-I'm trying the cmdlets suggested by the mgmt console as well as reading online. The syntax is getting to me. I don't like how you have to refer to an object with it's full AD path. It's unique within the directory, why do I need to path it?

  • 64-Bit means leaving some of my old tricks behind [KEITH]
-Exchange 2007 production requires 64-bit Windows (NOTE: can run 32-bit, but only supported for testing).
-I have a couple apps that hook into Exchange (RightFax and Blackberry ES) So, in going live, I had to load a connector for RightFax on my new Exchange 2k7 server. It has no CD-ROM drive, so I figured I'd copy an ISO over and use my MS Virtual ISO image mounter to load the app.
-Unfortunately, it uses a kernel-mode driver and was blocked from loading by Windows. I am curious how many other utilities and tricks I have that I'm going to have to give up and/or find an alternative.
-I did find a replacement with Daemon Tools Lite which is a free version of a larger set of tools. I didn't like the install as it kept trying to change your home page and load ad supported crap. At least you could choose no and it respected that choice. It has several features related to optical disc security measures (or counter-measures) but I'm not familiar with them.

Listener Feedback

From listener....Brad Call who posted a comment on the blog

Awesome song Keith!!! I didn’t know you had such talents. Keep up the great work. I love the POD Cast!!!

From Listener...Andy who posted a comment on the blog regarding my post on the Server Staging Checklist

Thanks Keith I really needed this today - I’ve not looked through it yet but will provide feedback. Would the wiki be a good place for feedback/discussion on this?

[KEITH] I also created a wiki page for some discussion about the checklist. Post your comments/suggestions/ideas on what you think is missing or what you do different.

Another comment from Andy on Episode 55 came in just as I started recording...

Couple of comments (I’m still in the middle of listening to this podcast). 1. You can run sysinternal tools from a cmd prompt - just run \\live.sysinternals.com\tools\autoruns.exe if you don’t believe me. 2. The printer migration tool has worked well for me several times so don’t be put off just because Keith couldn’t get it to work 3. Was interested in orca - i tried looking at that when I was deploying office2003 (I think). Couldn’t make head nor tail of what I was meant to do with it. However, that idea of symantec rollout is VERY appealing to me - must make sure the REBOOT=REALLYSUPPRESS is turned on though - I once rolled out an update without changing it…..never again!
