Chit-Chat - What's going on with you?

[Steve]

  • I'd like to welcome John Hubert to the show. John has a background in Information Resources and Computer Science. Day to day, John does Systems, Network, and Database Administration for a local municipality and I've had the opportunity to work with him on numerous occasions.
  • Discussion with John
*DNS Bug
-Are your servers patched? NAT safe?

*Keeping up on new technology
  • Access Based Enumeration
-A feature that is new as of Windows Server 2003 SP1?. It is a separate download from Microsoft Downloads for Server 2003 SP1?, and is a feature on Server 2008.
-ABE can be applied at the server or the share level and prevents people from seeing or accessing shares that they do not have read access to. ABE only works on shares, if a person is locally on the machine or Remote Desktoped to the machine, the folders will be visible.
  • New Podcast?
-Don Jones and Greg Shield at Concentrated Technology have started a podcast covering news topics relating to systems administrators. They don't have an RSS feed yet, but the first show is up.
-Pretty interesting, they started with a topic about a network admin who changed all the passwords on a major government network and refused to turn them over. We've talked on this show about a number of similar cases.
-Concentrated Technology is a new venture between Don Jones and Greg Shields (who has previously been on our podcast).
*Challenges in Network Monitoring
->Polymon
->Event Logs
->Other
*SQL Server
->-Management Studio vs Query Express
->-Ranking Functions
-Jason Von Ruden of FantasticFreeware?.com passed on how he made LINQPad? work for him. LINQPad? had a few limitations, like only returning up to 1000 records and not being able to export to CSV. Well, he found a LINQ To CSV from Matt Perdeck, which solved both of his problems. You can read about how to configure this at Jason's blog.
-The cool thing about this is it just shows how extensible applications can be, if they are written in a manner that accepts plugins. I know other apps have this type of feature (the Pidgin IM client comes to mind, as well as Notepad++), but for some reason .NET based applications just seem more approachable to me.
*Linux / Windows in the SM Environment
->-Homogeneous vs. Heterogenous
->-Cost of money, cost of experience/time
->-
*Good coding practices and impact on the non-programmers in your life
*organization and communication for project success
->-Source Control - For Sysadmins too
->-Ticketing/Bug Tracking Systems
->-
*Exchange 2007
-Pastebin code that has been "heavily modified"
-Scripts to automate working with the repository
-
-Get-Packet originally created by Robbie Foust (frequently seen in the PowerShell chat room)
-Updated by Jeff Hicks at Sapien Technologies, and then he created an Analyze-Packet Script.
-Just shows some of the versatility
