[Rich] and I'm Rich Niemeier.

[Steve] and I'm Steve Murawski.

[Keith] This is Episode 61 recorded on July 29th, 2008.

Chit-Chat - What's going on with you?

[Steve]

  • I'm coming to realize I just have to be busy.. I can't stop picking up new projects.

[Rich]

[Keith]

  • Going camping. My wife thinks it will be fun. I'm preparing for a disaster.

[Keith]

  • I am going to be on a Philly Tech Guys round-table on the Mike Tech Show. Mike was gracious enough to invite me to participate. We'll be recording on August 2nd and he'll release shortly thereafter.
  • PodCamp? Philly 2008 is being held on September 6th & 7th at Temple University in downtown Philadelphia. Mike will be there as well as Paul from the Caffination podcast. Look for some fun stuff to come out of that. Or, if you are in the area, try to attend. It's always a great time.
  • We were reminded that we promised on the last show to post our podcast listening line-ups and Steve and I have done so on the blog. So, if you want to see what else is out there that we like, take a look.
  • Lastly, we are moving to a two-week recording schedule temporarily. We've gotten some feedback that the shows are better with more of us and we can commit the prep time, etc. We've all just been busy with work and home lately, so we'll cut back a little for now and get back up to speed at the end of the summer most likely.

News Topics

-I'm excited. I haven't done much with the VMWare server on Windows, but now that the bare-metal version is free, I'm going to see where I can use it.
-
  • Brocade buys Foundry Networks for $3B
-Article notes the future FCoE? (FibreChannel? over Ethernet) standard as the driving force. I would think iSCSI may have played a role as well.
-

  • Level3 - I now hate you. [KEITH]
-Got another bill after they screwed me on the long disconnect process.
-Turns out, they didn't 'disconnect' the leased firewalls and related services even though I clearly included those sub-accounts in the original disconnect request.
- I figured it out once I called them and they said the account is still active. My last email with their billing analyst clearly stated we would have NO services with Level3.

  • Don't like Vista - Try Mojave [STEVE]
-In order to combat some of the bad press regarding Vista, MS did something interesting
-They found consumers that didn't run Vista, said they hated it or knew it was bad. So they showed them a new operating system called "MoJave?". They loved it, wanted it as soon as it came out. They said things like, it's secure, it's fast, I love the interface. At the end the told them MoJave? was really Vista and it has been available for more than a year!
  • Blackberry Server Move [KEITH]
-Pretty clean. The instructions are a little misleading. They indicate to install the new server then restore the SQL DB. Problem is, the SQL DB references the old server name in the MDS configuration. So, the URL for the MDS service was wrong.
-I un-installed and re-installed with the DB in place and it updated the the proper entries.
-One cool thing that I hadn't done before (or thought possible) was to restore a SQL2000 SP4? DB to SQL2005?. I know I've had trouble in the past when I had version mis-matches on DBMS levels and couldn't restore, but it was between different SP levels in SQL2000. Either way, I thought it was cool that the SQL2005? Management Studio had no problems.

  • Exchange 2007 Upgrade [KEITH]
-All users moved.
-Still getting and error on Address Book creation on the server (Event Log), but clients are running fine. I have some leads and will get it ironed out.
-I temporarily shut down the old Exchange Server to test, but am keeping it up for a couple weeks based on recommendations I've seen.
-Link: http://
-We have a RightFax enterprise fax server that has connectors to Exchange and I needed to install the connector on the new Exchange 2007 server and config the RightFax server to point to it.
I loaded the connector fine and pointed the RF server to it. I could see the pulse files and then the fax doc dropped into the queue, it processed and disappeared.....Not just from the queue, from everywhere. It never made it to the mailbox.
-I figured the connector is the problem and scoured their knowledgebase with no results. So, I call Captaris and the guy quickly find a KB article that tells me to change all my user profiles on the RF server to use their SMTP address rather than their distinguished name.
-Legacy Distinguished Name ex: "/O=FIRST ORGANIZATION/OU= FIRSTADMINISTRATIVEGROUP/CN=RECIPIENTS/CN=EXAMPLEUSER"
-Once I switched them all to SMTP it worked fine. Luckily I only have around 30 users and it was easy to do manually. They have a utility (CapaSync?) that you can apply a transform to users using an XML style sheet. It looks like this should have been used when the upgrade happened, but since I was still on 2000 then, it was safer to just update them manually.

  • Run Your Own Server Podcast is back [STEVE]
-The Run Your Own Server Podcast is back in production. They've recently released a couple of shows and are asking for questions, to do more of a question and answer type show.
-If you are looking for a show that is more focused on managing servers, or focused on Linux/Unix/BSD, check them out.
  • Watchguard Firebox firewall activation [KEITH]
-Only one user
-Must be DHCP assigned to be that user
-Register profile
-Get keys
-Paste keys
-Wha?? Why the whole process.

Listener Feedback

From listener....Sigmund in Norway who posted a comment on the blog

I subscribe via iTunes, and since this last episode, there is an error message (in Norwegian, but it's something similar to "not a valid URL") and the episode does not download.

http://podcast.acoupleofadmins.com/media/ACOAPi.xml doesn't seem to parse. I think it's the ampersand on line 36.

Regards, Sigmund

[KEITH] My apologies. I cut and pasted and I used an ampersand where I normally don't, so it pooched it. Thanks Sigmund, you were spot on with that being the cause.
