[Keith] Welcome to the Mind Of Root. I'm Keith Albright

[Rich] and I'm Rich Niemeier.

[Keith] This is Episode 64 recorded on August 26th, 2008.

Chit-Chat - What's going on with you?

[Rich]

  • '>>POS Challenges - allotting enough time to resolve unexpected miscommunication.
  • '>>>Training site support
  • '>>>>EU Data input into proprietary application

[Keith]

  • Camping went well. Need to get an air mattress though. Wife had a good laugh on that one.
  • You've been out of touch on a pretty big POS install project Rich. Any challenges or interesting stories you want to share?

Housekeeping Items

[Keith]

  • Been trying to add a 'Current Book' plug-in to the Blog in case anyone is interested. I started a series of fantasy/sci-fi books from Robert Jordan called the 'Wheel of Time'. It's very good. I lucked into it by finding the prequel at the Dollar Store and loved it. So, I went to our local used book shop (Lion Around Books) and he had almost the whole series (used). So, I bought one and will probably go back for the rest this weekend. We'll also put up any tech books we're reading, etc.

News Topics

  • Red Hat and Fedora Project Systems Compromised
-Sounds like they only compromised a couple of OpenSSH? packages for RHEL4? and 5......wait a minute....only a couple!!!!
-Although Fedora project systems were also compromised, they found no evidence of any tampering and believe the package system can be used without risk.
  • Mets New Ballpark
-I mainly threw this in because a friend of mine works on the Mets IT staff and this will be a huge move for them.
-Good luck with the move Eric. I'm sure it will go well with you on the job.

  • Proprietary SQL application needs client installed which corrupts com+ [RICH]
-Microsoft recommends re-installation of XP OS?
-Have not done install yet. Will report back if there is a better way.

-PhotoBooth? is a favorite for my kids. It was the first app I showed them on the Mac and they spent hours taking funny pics and making videos.
-They moved on to other apps and then the other day went to use it. It froze up and crashed. I relaunched, same thing. I thought a patch might have caused it and went on-line to research. Only one other person with similar problem and the dragged a new copy of PhotoBooth? from a time machine backup to fix it. I tried that, but no good.
-So, I figured I would back up the images the created in case I needed to re-install. I found they had 1.42GB of images/movies in the library. I had heard complaints in the past about iPhoto limits so I moved them to another folder and launched PhotoBooth?....No problems. I don't know if it was the library size or the number of items (593), but clearing it fixed it.

  • MS Exchange 2007 System Attendant Service Problems [KEITH]
-I have found that the MS Exchange System Attendant service is not started and it caused problems when executing certain admin functions on Exchange 2007. I manually start the service and it is fine.
-I found that my server had been rebooting because of a bad UPS in the data center (and my continued power problems) and the service wasn't starting on boot properly.
-I found a MS article detailing the problem and I have two options. Change the services dependencies to start services in a different order and go lax on what is needed to start the service or add a timing buffer. I'm going with the timing buffer and we'll see if that solves it.
  • File Recovery [RICH]
-PCI File Recovery
- Had to recover some deleted pictures from my son's first day in Kindergarten.
  • Virtual Desktops [KEITH]
-Saw a post about a new Sysinternals utility for virtual desktops called 'Desktops'
-Since I am a use of an Open Source app called VirtuaWin?, I thought I'd take a look.
-I realize it is 1.0 and I already use VirtuaWin?, but here's what I didn't like
--ObjectDock? Menu only worked on Desktop1
--Systray icons cleared for each desktop. Yes, it is clean. But it doesn't work for apps that use this for notifications.
--No shutdown function. I had to kill the process. Ironically, I used ProcessExplorer?
-I'll stick with VirtuaWin?. Other nice feature in VW is mousing to next window by moving to sides/top/bottom of screen.

Listener Feedback

I like the content of the podcasts but I’m having a hard time listening to them due to the high pitched tone that appears in a lot of the podcast. It sounds similar to an “alternator whine” that you sometimes get if you route your audio cables to close to the power cables… Are you guys aware of the noise in your podcast? Am I the only one that can hear it?

[KEITH]Unfortunately, no you are not the only one. It is a problem I have been struggling with for some time and appears to have gotten worse. I re-routed cable, but no luck. I am going to try to switch sound cards and see if it helps.

I have been using Live Mesh for 2 months now, and for the most part I’m very happy with it. I find that the RDC reaction time is very slow compared to LogMeIn?, but I know it is still a CTP and things will get better with updates and feed back. The one thing that does frustrate me with Live Mesh is that you have to go through a Windows Live log on page to connect. Usually this is not an issue however working for a school district as my day job we have to block this site because of our policies on messaging programs. It just wish there was an alternative for the logon page, since if we allow access to Live Mesh we would also be allowing access to Web Messengers.

[KEITH] That's a tough one. Not sure what you are using for your web filtering (or if you are the one in control of it), but you might be able to define a different profile for you as a user that allows that access. I know with the MS ISA server, you can use the proxy client on the desktop and establish different groups on the server to allow different access. (eg. FTP/HTTP/HTTPS for some, just HTTP/HTTPS for others). Depending on your proxy/filter, you might make an exception for just login.live.com. Not sure if that would work, but it is worth a shot. There are more drastic measures like a VPN tunnel to home and a proxy running there that allows you out free and clear, but that's a lot of work.

If you have a suggestion for Brad to get him access, please send it along or post it on the blog.
