  • Reminder - Still post your response on the blog about your worst product install experience. I'm going to flip it around this week and ask for your best experience. I know I've ranted about their latests version, but my best experience was probably Symantec AntiVirus back in the v.7 days. It was lean, stable, and the management tools were great. I did mostly remote installs to servers and although basic, the management and rollout were perfect. The Symantec packager and GRCDrop? utilities were very handy also.

So, what's your best experience?

  • I'm kicking around another idea of a peer resume review. We should all have our resume's up-to-date (especially in this economy). I'm sure there are privacy concerns, but was wondering what the audience thought of the idea.
  • Philly Tech Guys Show #2 released.

  • 10 ways you might be breaking the law with your computer [RICH]
# Date: May 16th, 2008
# Author: Debra Littlejohn Shinde
- What was an interesting read. It seems like there may be many things to look out for
#1: Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA)

"The DMCA makes it a criminal offense to circumvent any kind of technological copy protection — even if you don’t violate anyone’s copyright in doing so. In other words, simply disabling the copy protection is a federal crime."

#2: No Electronic Theft (NET) Act

Made prosecution federal crime not civil crime

#3: Court rulings regarding border searches

I cross the border all the time and feel like this has taken away some of my privacy

#4: State laws regarding access to networks

it can be a crime to trespass, on to someone else's ether

#5: “Tools of a crime” laws

I might have some? How do you distinguish or license appropriate use?

#6: “Cyberstalking” laws
#7: Internet Gambling laws

can not except monies from betters.

#8: Security Breach Disclosure laws

California - Must declare when unencrypted data has been compromised.

#9: Community Broadband Act of 2007
#10: Pro IP Act
- I'm sure these things are enforced selectively. But who wants to get selected?
  • Video: Three ways you might be breaking the law with your computer [RICH]
-Interesting that he believes EU's may put a companies Hardware and Network at risk.
-I travel internationally, well I don't really consider Canada international, but it is. They have judgments that enforce the rights of border agents to search digital devices.
  • Dependency Walker [KEITH]
-Problem with an old in-house developed app that surfaced recently. It appears the Crystal Reports support file is not registered properly. Original install logs for app show it could not be registered. I was able to do it manually, but looked into why it originally wasn't
-Researching found that this is typical of a dependency problem
-This app evaluates a DLL/OCX file for the files it depends on and lets you know what is missing.
-My library (CRYSTL32?.OCX) came up good which is why I was able to register it manually, but it still didn't solve my problem. Continuing search, but thought this was a cool troubleshooting tool.
  • Virginia Supreme Court strikes down anti-spam law [KEITH]
-VA Supreme court invalidates anti-spam law as unconstitutional on appeal by spammer
-Sticking point is commercial vs. non-commercial email and the tenets of free speech. Under the law, unsolicited religious and political content is equally illegal.
-NC Spammer admitted his email was all commercial, but got off by getting the law invalidated.
-His own lawyer admitted his clients actions would have been illegal under Federal CAN-SPAM act, but his actions predated that law.
-This is why I hate lawyers. I have zero respect for someone who can admit their clients are abhorrent, but still work to get them acquitted.
  • LHC Computer Hacked [KEITH]
-Hackers identifying themselves as Group 2600 of the Greek Security Team accessed computers connected to the Compact Muon Solenoid detector
-The LHC experiments have very complex computer systems for data recording and analysis and even more sensitive systems for experiment control, trigger and data acquisition," said MIT physicist and Collider collaborator Frank Taylor. "You could imagine that penetrating the 'real time domain' could have catastrophic consequences."
-Then why wasn't security a much bigger concern?
