Chit-Chat - What's going on with you?

[Steve]

  • Just keeping up with stuff.. I've been fighting a few fires, one of which should be a good topic in the coming weeks. Other than that, not much new.

[Rich]

  • IT Crowd air's in the US on IFC cable channel "Yesterdays Jam"

[Keith]

  • Scareware term. I don't think I had ever heard of it before. I just lumped them in with Malware/Spyware.

[Rich]

[Steve]

  • Hal Rottenberg at the PowerScripting Podcast has won the Microsoft MVP award for Admin Frameworks (PowerShell). Congratulations Hal!
  • I've been a bit more active in the LOPSA community and I'll be talking more about it as we go, but I really like the energy and focus for the organization.

[Keith]

  • Last weeks recording problems - Thank god I'm still putting it out on UStream?. Brian dropped a comment saying the show didn't sound bad. Thanks Brian, I'm glad we didn't take too far of a step back on audio quality because of my mistake.
  • Got a couple more people interested in the Peer Resume Review. I'm going to work on the logistics and put it out on the next show.

  • Hyper-V Server Download available! [STEVE]

  • Vista install problems [KEITH]
-BSOD on Memory Management
-BSOD on Win32K?.sys
-Ran Microsofts OCA Memory Tester and it failed immediately on every test it ran.
-So, I got 2GB and the install went fine. Not performing as well as I'd hoped. I am still having problems w/updates. I downloaded SP1? and installed manually.

  • Seagate Might Attempt SanDisk? Takeover [RICH]
-eweek
-By Alex Vochin, Technology Editor
-25th of June 2008,
- Article talks about Seagate attempting a takeover of Sandisk
- My question is why would sandisk be vulerable to a take over?
-New Beta Version

• Update Group Policy (gpupdate or secedit /refreshpolicy)
• Start computers by Wake On Lan (WOL)
• Remote restart
• Remote shutdown
• Real time graphical reporting

-New Features (GPUpdate?)

• Improved WoL? functionality including custom Mac/IP address lookup and support for no-DHCP environments.
• Immediate WSUS client update
• New powerful customizable User Interface
• View PowerShell code for all chosen commands
• Support for Win Server 2008 Standard & Enterprise in both x32 and x64 iterations.

-New Features (GPRemoteAdmin?)

• Remote Assistance
• Remote Desktop \\ • Remote Event Viewer
• Run executable remotely
• View remote computer in explorer
• Remote registry reading
• View and run chosen commands as PowerShell code.
• Full support for scheduling all commands using Windows Task Schedule

-This is a great free tool (the new GPRemoteAdmin? will be a paid product). It is in beta now, so grab it and try it out.
-One catch, on the first install, it has to extend ADUC forest wide. After that, you "only" need Domain Admin rights.
-This new version will show you the PowerShell commands it is running and installs snapins that you can use in a regular PowerShell session.
  • Outlook Word MAPI problem [KEITH]
-Intermittent problem for one user. When she tries to send a Word doc from within Word using the "Send as attachment" feature, gets a MAPI failure (Unspecified Error). Once it starts, rebooting doesn't fix. Oddly, the next time she goes to use it, it will work.
-Fix is not too bad. Delete reg key for Office then run a repair. It resets a lot of user defined settings though.
-While researching, found this MS document on command line switches for MS Word that you can use to disable plug-ins, etc.
  • Process Monitor V2 Released [STEVE]
-From the Sysinternals Suite, ProcMon? was updated and has some new features.
-In addition to enhancements of existing features, it now logs TCP and UDP network connections from processes..
-It's, it's, it's three tools in one (FileMon, RegMon?, TcpView?).. now how much would you pay??
  • New Laptops - Goodbye PCMCIA...Hello adapter [KEITH]
-We have a production control system that can be managed two ways. Software connection via RS-232 and writing to PCMCIA memory card.
-New laptops with no serial and no PCMCIA (has ExpressCard? slot).
-We are working to get the RS-232 working, but it's an old system and they haven't used that method in years, so I am trying to figure out the bits/parity/stop bits/baud rate figured out. The software doesn't give a clue.
-Instead of getting too hooked on that, I figured I'd look for an CardBus? adapter. This one looks promising and I've ordered it. Addonics was the brand I bought for the CF/IDE adapters and they are great, so it is promising.
-Sewell Also has one, but more expensive. It does have a cable which might be more comfortable to use, but I went on cost and my history with Addonics.
  • VPN server bought on EBay? allows access to government systems [KEITH]
-Brings to mind, how do you dispose of equipment?
-Just this past weekend, I dropped off two PC's and two monitors at the county run Hazardous Waste drop off. My wife asked afterwards if it's safe. I told her I remove the drives and will scrub them separately and will dispose of them the next drop off time.
-Do you have a formal plan to prevent these types of situations?
-Within a couple days of seeing the first story, I found the another one about a digital camera bought on eBay that had classified images from the MI6? intelligence agency on it.
  • Micron PC/Gateway Support Call [KEITH]
-PC in my batch bought when Gateway was transitioning to Micron. Screen shows garbage on POST and have to power off and on to get it to boot properly. I didn't think it was that frequent until user approached me and said it was now everyday. I had tried updating BIOS and video drivers.
-Next problem crops up w/Broadcom Gig card. User loses connection and when I bring up the status window, it's connected with 4 billion packets sent, 0 received. I wound up putting another card in temporarily.
-Called Micron. Couldn't find PC in system. 20 mins later and an import, they have it. Tells me to reseat the onboard video...huh? I run through what I tried on video, she agrees to send me a new motherboard. I tell her about the NIC and that it was moot to address since it is on MB. She tells me to update driver. I said I couldn't find anything newer than 2006 ver on their driver site. Their driver list for my build has the Intel Pro listed. She tells me I must have swapped the NIC and she couldn't help. I told her it came with the Broadcom one and she tells me to download the Intel drivers because they are on the site for that build, they should work.
