[Keith] Welcome to the Mind Of Root. I'm Keith Albright

[Rich] and I'm Rich Niemeier.

[Steve] and I'm Steve Murawski. This is Episode 78 streaming live on Ustream.tv on December 3, 2008. Today's show is sponsored by Quest Software; Helping you rule your domain. And by Idera, the makers of PowerShellPlus?; making PowerShell easier to learn and master.

Chit-Chat - What's going on with you?

[Steve]

[Rich]

[Keith]

  • Bombings in Mumbai
-First, our thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by the attacks.
-Steve was in a unique position of having guests from Indian when it occurred. I hope they and their family and friends were not affected by the attacks.
-The CSTechCast? crew had a good discussion on the off-shoring implications of these types of incidents.
  • New studio toys. I promise not to annoy folks too much.....maybe.
  • Also battling a pinched nerve that keeps making a portion of my left arm go numb. It's weird. I usually affect other peoples nerves, not my own.

  • Keep the comments and feedback coming! In the past few months, we've really had a great spike in feedback and comments, and I think it has led to some good topics and conversations. Let's keep it going!
  • Also, a question on ettiquette - If someone posts a question via a blog comment, should you a - respond via a comment or new blog post, via the podcast, or via email, or some combination of those?

[Keith]

  • Resume Peer Review feedback. I heard from one participant who really like the outcome and brought up the idea of doing them regularly and making sure a new set of eyes did the review each time. I think it's a great idea and will put something on my calendar to do it roughly every six months. Does that sound like a good interval?
  • Just a quick note of thanks to Idera for being a sponsor. Their ad run is done, but we hope to work with them again in the future.

Steve's Topics

  • Snarl
-Snarl is a notification system for Windows. It displays notifications on-screen for applications which support it.
-
  • Technet Snacks
-Dave Smith sent me this link to a list of "Learning Snacks"
-Learning Snacks are short, interactive presentations about popular topics created by Microsoft Learning experts. Each Snack is delivered by using innovative Microsoft Silverlight technology and includes various media, such as animations and recorded demos. At the end of each free-as-in-beer presentation, you can view more Snacks, learn more about the topic, or visit a related Web site.
  • Moving a Windows Live ID
-I had an old email addressed tied to my Windows Live (formerly Passport) account, which was tied to my Technet and other accounts.
-A year and a half ago, I asked a support tech if there was a way to migrate login to another account. You could change your contact email address, but the login name was set to an old account and I wanted to clean that up.
-When signing up for some of the CTP stuff for Windows Azure, it migrated my account to a Live account and reinstated my old email address as the contact address. There was no way to change the "mail to" address. It did offer an opportunity to migrate my live account.
-Pet peeve - Windows Live Mail will not forward to a Gmail account and I'm not seeing an easy way to set up POP3? access, if you even can.
-MS, if you want me to use your Live Services, make it easy for me to migrate to and FROM them. I'll be more likely to use your service if I can slowly drop in functionality that I currently have in Gmail.

  • Email - Does it scale
-SMS, Twitter, IM, RSS..
-I would much rather deal with an issue via IM and get my notifications via RSS. Email is good for creating a "CYA" trail, but IM can be too if you have logs. The problem is if you can't get the other party on IM. Email is asynchronous, though people sometimes expect it to be synchronous ("I emailed you 30 seconds ago, why haven't you responded?)
-There is even a push to get 911 service via email.. I don't even want to touch the problems there!!!!
-How do you feel about email?
  • 10 Things To Never Write in an Email or IM
-I thought the best ones were: "Is this actually legal?" and "I don't want to discuss this in e-mail. Please give me a call."

Keith's Topics

  • Managing your Mobile workstations
-I found this one in an article in NetworkWorld?. Looks pretty slick if you have a large mobile workforce.
-It gives you Policy based control of network connectivity for mobile clients
-VPN enforcement on public networks
-Disabled wireless radios when another connection in use
-Proxy config based on network profile to prevent bogus proxies
-Auto-switching rules to minimize telecom costs by setting higher priority to less expensive connectivity options.
  • Exchange 2007 Management Tools
-Needed the management tools for my workstation and for BackupExec? server I'm building.
-32-bit not included on DVD. I thought that was odd, but OK. Easily downloaded and installed.
  • Microsoft iSCSI initiator
-Playing with OpenFiler?
-Took the recommendation I found in the forum. I didn't do any security at first and will layer on top of that.
-I can do this now since it is not mission critical and nothing that requires security
-One thing I was not aware of. The Initiator works on XP Pro as well. I'll keep that in mind for the one I plan to build at home.
  • Proxy Fight
-Moving my MS ISA proxy server to new hardware. I built a new Win2k3 server and loaded ISA. I now have to jump through a couple of hoops to get it working. See MS KB article.
-Since it is out of date and out of support, I was wondering what my options were to change proxy servers.
-I don't use the proxy client, I don't content filter, I do want AD integration and I'd like some reporting features. Any recommendations? What are you folks using?

Listener Feedback

From listener....Andy over at Absoblogginlutely Andy

Not sure why you were using the laptop for a kvm - i’m assuming it is so you don’t need to pack an extra one for the server? If thats the case then why not just rdp in? if you have a monitor but no mouse/keyboard, then synergy is probably the way to go.
