  • Look who's getting into the Twitter thing.. :)
  • For those of you in the live stream, tomorrow night the PowerScripting Podcast will have the PowerShell team of Jeffrey Snover and Bruce Payette on. Could be some good news about CTP3? or Beta 1!!! If you are listening to the recorded version, check out the PowerScripting Pocast's Episode 53 (powerscripting.net).

[Keith]

  • Twitter story - got a follower and when I saw her picture, I thought she looked familiar. It kept bugging me for a day or two and then it clicked. I met her at the ITEC show recently. She was the one with the ASUS 900 Netbook just like mine. Most fascinating part was she found me by looking for tech related Twitter streams.
  • Congrats to Norbert Davis on his 300th podcast. Awesome milestone.
  • I also reconnected with a past co-worker recently. Booch Metalhead, Intergalactic Man Of Mystery. If he's listening, he'll probably hate me for that. I'm actually going to see if I can get him as a guest on the show. The last I had heard of him before reconnecting recently, he was working freelance writing manuals for Red Hat.

Steve's Topics

  • Interview With Richard Campbell
-
-Topics
-Keeping up on new technology (specifically for the "firefighting" IT Pro)
-How you manage living in both the Dev and IT Pro world and stay current in both?
-Tips for IT Pro's working with developers
-What got you into podcasting?
-From the perspective of someone active in both the Dev and IT Pro world, how do you see PowerShell evolving?
-From the IT Pro perspective?
-From the Developer perspective?
-What are some of the implications of the Windows Azure platform that was announced?
-[KEITH]What got you into Podcasting?
-[KEITH]You're on about 38 podcasts. How do you find the time? BTW, the Monday show is awesome. I've got to find a way to fit that into my podcast lineup.
-Link: http://
  • On the heels of 28 updates, a zero-day exploit for IE....[KEITH]
-We may see an out-of-cycle patch, so check your WSUS servers regularly.
-[UPDATE]MS to issue a patch. Per Microsoft: The emergency patch should be available from 1800 GMT on 17 December.
-Microsoft does supply a workaround until such time that a patch can be released:
-Based on their investigation:
-setting the Internet zone security setting to High will protect users from known attacks. However, for the most effective protection, customers should evaluate a combination of using the High security setting in conjunction with one of the following workarounds.
-Disable XML Island functionality
-Restrict Internet Explorer from using OLEDB32?.dll with an Integrity Level ACL
-Disable Row Position functionality of OLEDB32?.dll
-Unregister OLEDB32?.dll
-Use ACL to disable OLEDB32?.dll
  • Investing in your Skillset[STEVE]
-This blog post is focused at DBA's, but is really applicable to any admin or IT Pro.
-Invest in an area which can enhance your professional credibility most
-Invest in an area which can improve your work visibility most
-Invest in an area which can minimize your work time (so you have more leisure time)
-Now for the PowerShell plug... PowerShell is a new and emerging technology and learning it fits all three areas.
-Learning PowerShell puts you in a position to quickly adapt existing processes to new applications that support PowerShell (like everything coming out of Microsoft)
-PowerShell provides in the box tools for reporting and logging, so you can make your supervisors and stakeholders aware of your activities, providing you a way to make your accomplishments visible or advertise the scope of your responsibilities.
-PowerShell is an automation technology, providing you a way to solve your problems once and reuse that solution as needed or on a scheduled basis.
-Looks like they have a link to download the old copies, but no new ones will be made available.
-
-[Steve]Crap.. I liked SSL Explorer and had it on my future projects list. I'll have to try something else now.. What, I don't know...
  • Another Reason to Hate Symantec[KEITH]
-I get an email from Verizon Business that we violated terms of service agreement.
-Turns out, Symantec SMTP Mail Security appliance sent a bunch of NDR's to someone on UU.NET and that system flagged us. The NDR's were sent because Symantec flagged the original message as SPAM.
-I've looked into this before and found no way to turn off NDR's. I figured with this I better find a solution. I did and I can't believe Symantec actually put this out there.
-Build another Symantec SMTP server and funnel outgoing traffic through it. Then config it to drop all traffic from the notifications email address.
-Priceless.
-I've had a bit of fun playing around with this, and now that I've found the actual project out on Codeplex, I'm going to continue to build on this.

Listener Feedback

From listener....Michael Holzinger

I've only recently, over the last two months, started listening to your a show, having previously dismissed it as to techo due its title.

I subscribe and download your show, amongst a fair few others, and listen to it on my way to and from work on public transport, and at other times when I'm driving in the car.

I've just finished listening to the Dec, 10 show and thought I'd let you know that there was another subscriber, sadly not from Africa or one of the other unrepresented locations, but from Melbourne, Australia.

My brief bio includes programing a Lisa for payroll processing, move into IT and then into management at a rail/road transport company, into the private sector consulting to SMB's, and now back on the payroll with a state government financial department rolling out enterprise financial and BI systems.

I thoroughly enjoy the show and will continue to listen, circumstances willing.

Regards Michael Holzinger

[KEITH]There you go Rich. More listeners from far-flung places for you. BTW, you've got street cred in my book Michael. Anyone who remembers the Lisa....and actually used it....gets points in my book.

From listener....Mr. Tomahawk

I heard to rant about Backup Exec ending support for, and I think the decision has much to do with that Microsoft had ended support quite a while ago so it comes as no surprise to me. We quit using NT about five years ago where I work, so I haven't ran into the wall you have.

Craig Miller aka MrTomahawk?

[KEITH] Craig also provided some contact info for Symantec as a resource for a workaround. Thank you Craig, however, it's not that big a deal for me. My comment was only that I couldn't understand the need for not supporting the old agents. File system and protocols haven't changed, so why not support the old agent.

From listener....Brian Malanowsky

I was listening to the last podcast about the guy who wants to do the video employee and got an idea for a topic. So many times in technology, higher ups cap the budget for IT for the sake of saving a few bucks. If your bosses came to you with a million dollars for your IT, what would you spend it on?

[KEITH]I'm going to post this on the blog for discussion. We've talked about this in the past, but given we're in the holiday wish-list season, I thought I'd bring it up.
