  • Congratulations to Hal Rottenberg over at the Powerscripting Podcast on the birth of his son. He surprised dad by coming a little bit early, but is doing well. Unlike software, early release dates aren't as good.

  • Tread lightly with SEP 11 [RICH]
-Product that combines - firewall - Network Access Control and good old antivirus-malware protection
-problems with centrally deployed up date of MR3? to fix issues in MR2?.
-Business mergers can definitely effect a product

-We talked a little about this being a potential. Well, it finally happened.

-If this counter value is falling under 20%, the disk system is saturated. You'll either need to move some of the IO to another spindle or get a faster disk subsystem.
-Reports the percentage of time that the disk system was not processing requests and no work was queued.
-This counter is available for each physical disk the OS sees, and there is an _Total option. If you are using the total option, you are watching for overall saturation of the hard drive system. If you think a particular drive (or drive array) might be your problem, you can watch a counter for that specific drive.

-Not very complicated by Steves standards possiblly.
-But did the job, found the script on the internet

-So, I worked my butt off to get a training room setup for 8 simultaneous students to learn our new financial software.
-I scraped up enough laptops and loaded the client software, setup the network and projection system.
-That's when I found out we only have 6 simultaneous user licenses. So, instructor plus 5 was all that could access anyway.

Listener Feedback

From listener....Marcus F Marcus sent me some good feedback about the Perfmon topics. He also sent me a list of the counters he uses in maintaining web servers, and we'll work those into the list. Thanks Marcus.

From listener....Tony C I was intrigued by your comments about SSL Explorer. I had not heard of that product even though I have routinely searched for Open Source SSL VPN solutions.

It looks like a group has forked the community edition of SSL Explorer and has recently released a couple of updates. The forked project is called Adito and can be found on SourceForge? at: http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=899645

From listener....Patrick K I have a single exchange 2003 server. We have been getting a lot of “inappropriate email” lately that appears to come from ourselves. Users will receive spam from their own email address and also from other internal staff. We also have a lot of distribution lists and some of them are spamming external contacts with these emails. Any idea how to stop them?

[STEVE]- You can filter out external email coming in to your domain that is spoofing a local address using the Sender Filtering option in the Exchange System Manager -> Global Settings -> Message Delivery (right click and select Properties). Go to the Sender Filtering and add a sender of *.<your domain here>. After setting that you will have the option to Archive filtered messages, Filter messages with a blank sender, accept messages without notifying the sender, or drop the connection if the address matches a filter. I use the filter messages with blank sender and drop the connection if an address matches filter.

You will then need to make sure that Sender Filtering is enabled on your SMTP server. Navigate to Administrative Groups->First Administrative Group->Servers->Your server->Protocols->SMTP->Default SMTP Virtual Server (right click and choose Properties). Across from IP Address, click the Advanced button. Select your IP address (or the default of All Unassigned) and choose edit. There you will have the option to apply Sender Filter. Check that. Click OK and return to the Default SMTP Virtual Server. Stop and start it (you really shouldn't have to do that, but I like to make sure the settings take effect right away).

You should be free and clear from spam pretending to come from your internal domain.

From listener....Cd-MaN?

Hey guys, just wanted to let you know that you could use psexec to launch the control panel under the system account as I described here: http://hype-free.blogspot.com/2009/01/disabling-accessibility-features-on.html
