  • Perfmon Counters - PhysicalDisk?\Avg. Disk sec/Read and Avg.Disk sec/Write [STEVE]
-Avg. Disk sec/Read
-Shows the average time, in seconds, of a read of data from the disk.
-If the number is larger than 25 milliseconds (ms), that means the disk system is experiencing latency when reading from the disk.
-For SQL Server® and Exchange Server, the acceptable threshold is much lower, approximately 10 ms.
-Avg.Disk sec/Write
-Shows the average time, in seconds, of a write of data to the disk.
-If the number is larger than 25 ms, the disk system experiences latency when writing to the disk.
-For SQL Server and Exchange Server, the acceptable threshold is much lower, approximately 10 ms.
-If you experience either of these issues, the solution here is to replace the current disk system with a faster disk system.
  • How does one stop the excessive growth of laptop users, who leave them on thier desk? [RICH]
-Just was noticing lately.. The compnay I work for enacted policies that require a high level of approval to get corporate email on your Blackberry.
-You know everyone and thier brother was getting a blackberry and setting up corporate email.
-Keith other than the upcharge by the Phone providor, how much does it cost per user to service BES?
-Well back to the laptops, I think our company should take a similar stand on who gets issued a laptop
-Those that actually take there laptops home are driving the work from home mentality.

[KEITH] It's really funny you mentioned this. I just had a conversation with a colleague today on the proliferation of laptops and she thought it would run through our organization. I pointed out that customer service reps wouldn't need them and since most employees are hourly, the after-hours implications are there too.

  • Exchange Hell [STEVE]
-Another good reason to look at a hosted solution. :)
-When I was on my way back from a meeting, I got a call that our email server wasn't relaying mail. I got back and started to look into it.
-I found a number of warnings in the application event log like
-Exchange mailbox Server response timeout: Server: [My Server] User: [user@mydomain.com]. Exchange ActiveSync? Server failed to communicate with the Exchange mailbox server in a timely manner. Verify that the Exchange mailbox Server is working correctly and is not overloaded.
-and some errors like
-IP-based AUTD failed to initialize. Error code: [0x80004005].
-The Exchange mailbox Server: [My Server] has reached its timeout threshold. The mailbox server will be protected from new requests for [60] seconds.
-The volume of errors was causing my exchange server to not respond to clients trying to access their mailboxes.
-It turns out that these errors are related to the DNS patch from this summer. I found the information on the SBS blog, but the registry fix seemed to work for me. What was happening was that the DNS service on the machine was trying to grab ports being used by other Exchange related services. One of the comments that was made was that issues may not surface immediately. This was the case for me.. I've only had to reboot my server a couple of times since the application of that patch, and this was the first conflict I experienced.

  • Other problem found [STEVE]
-In troubleshooting my Exchange issue, I found that a process from my AV suite was maxing out a processor and slowly eating up available memory. I found this by reviewing the PerfMon? data I was taking with PolyMon. I was looking for indicators around the time leading up to the Exchange server failure and I saw processor spikes corresponding to the requests and timeouts, but I also saw a downward trend of available memory, which was released after a reboot. After the reboot, I could see the memory usage for that application grow. I only had perfmon data for the past two weeks on that server, since I just added it to the servers being monitored, but if I hadn't I probably would not have noticed anything wrong (since the memory being used was so gradual).

  • When will there be one laptop per child? [RICH]
-Is this dream dead? Is it a Lisa?
-I agree that OLPC made too many cahnges to quickly. But almost all of the changes were ahead of there time and have influenced todays technology.
-One Laptop Per Child was always a misguided idea

  • Properly removing an AD site, DC and DNS server [KEITH]
-Got a last minute call to help a friend with a client. They were having trouble logging in and connecting to Exchange.
-He knew they had made some changes and lost their IT person, but wasn't sure what the root cause was.
-Found they has a SBS2003? server as DC and a Windows 2003 member server.
-They recently closed a remote office and we found the DC entries, sites/services, and replication topology still existed as well as all the DNS entries. DHCP handing remote site DNS as secondary.
-SBS DC at main site had two NICs? in same local network. Not bonded; one static and one DHCP.
-Monitoring to see if this fully resolved the issue. Still to do; Service packs and patches and verify FSMO roles. I believe SBS DC has to have all FSMO roles, but I'm not sure.
  • What are your Favorite mobile phone apps? [RICH]
- I am usin Twibble to check my Twitter account - I like it
- Google apps a must have, I love google earth on my blackberry.
- Still haven't found aproductive use for it, but love to play with it.
- Send in your suggestions for mobile phone apps

  • GP Upgrade may be my leverage for getting Sharepoint [KEITH]
-Been trying to get interest in Sharepoint as replacement for our custom developed Intranet. Now that a major portion of Great Plains Dynamics is based off Sharepoint, people are interested a bit.
-How do you handle people changing processes? As we upgrade the software, we hope to better utilize the modules we have. In many cases, users were going outside of the system to perform processes that should be done within.

Listener Feedback

From listener....Patrick Ogenstad

I just dropped by to say thank you for talking about my project. If you have any questions about SYDI just let me know.

[KEITH] This was a website pick thrown out by Winston Wolf during show 82. Not sure if Patrick is a listener or just found us through the link, but it's cool that he offered his time. We should reach out to him for an interview.

Website Picks

Rich - http://kids.discovery.com/games/pompeii/pompeii.htmlJust a fun website for kids young and old. Who doesn't like to explode a Volcano

Steve - http://

Keith - http://www.acme.com/planimeter/ Pretty slick mash-up. Interfaces with Google maps and allows you to draw a shape around an area and have that area calculated for you. Allows for complex shapes by allowing you to add more points. I did my yard out of curiosity and it was accurate.
