  • You may have noticed Steve isn't with us tonight. Unfortunately, the power went out in his underground Fortress of Solitude, so he's trapped until the elevator works again.

  • Congrats to friends Steve and Sathana on the birth of their daughter Caelyn. Steve is a long-time geek friend from college. How geeky? Caelyn's birth announcement came from her own email address.

  • Windows 7 Is Not Helpful! [KEITH]
-Now that I have your attentions. Apparently, Vista as of Vista, .HLP files are no longer supported. You need to download the 620Kb file to install this function. I found this while testing our Customer Billing app on Windows 7. (Current Build BTW).
-I went to download it and it and it would not install claiming it was not for this version of Windows.
  • Windows Fundamentals and Windows Steady State [RICH]
-Using it for location that uses IE to acess an internal web application.
- Anti-Virus updates not saved, need to login as administrator to save updates periodically
- Has numerous limitations, Does not work with Novell Client
-"Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs? is not a general-purpose operating system. It is designed to work with the Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection client or third-party clients such as the Citrix ICA client. In addition, it allows for a limited number of workloads to be executed locally, including security software, management software, terminal emulation software, document viewers, and the .NET Framework." From Microsoft Website.
- Problems with Null.sys
-Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs? is exclusively available to Software Assurance customers
- Windows Steady State has Windows Disk Protection (WDP), this is primarily what I am trying to utilize.
- Formerly Shared Computer Toolkit
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 [KEITH]
-64-bit ONLY...WooHooo?! Finally, they're gettin' it.
-DNSSEC now supported.
-
-Steve sent me an interesting article comparing performance of AD functions between 32-bit and 64-bit version. Especially with larger AD implementations where the larger AD DB can be cached in the larger addressable memory space.
-The blog post discussing the pros/cons of using 64-bit windows for your DC throws out two cons of; no 16-bit app support and slower 32-bit apps. At this point, I don't think they should be running on a DC and the shops that will get the most out of the 64-bit generation should be large enough to have dedicated DC hardware. I'm a smaller shop, but my DC's run only that function. (NOTE: DR site is current exception.)

  • New Bluetooth standard to bring speed and energy efficiency.....still no security [KEITH]
-They talk about extending use to new devices, but never address the fundamental security flaws.
-Have they learned nothing from the early days of WiFi security?
  • Scan Inbox Issue [KEITH]
-Another change - Now using 'User Logon Name' automatically for the folder name to drop files in.
