Chit-Chat - What's going on with you?

[Steve]

  • And it continues.. One of these days I'll take a breather, but for now, it's full steam ahead. Monday, I've got a session at on PowerShell at a conference in the Wisconsin Dells (for IT admins that support K-12 schools) called Brainstorm. Tuesday, I'll be talking to developers about PowerShell at our local .NET User Group. And, of course, Wednesday's are here!

[Keith]

  • Look for an upcoming review of the new version 10 of SolarWinds? Engineer Toolset. SolarWinds? has been kind enough to provide us with a pre-release version to try out.

[Steve]I look forward to your review.. they have a pretty extensive toolset.

  • Philly Tech Guys this Saturday at 2PM EST. I'm thinking I might stream on the MOR UStream? as well.

  • Installed SQL Server 2008 [STEVE]
-Wasn't able to go to Server 2008 as I wanted, I had to reschedule that move until this summer.
-SQL Server 2008 is great. A performance problem on an application server went away as soon as updated my SQL Server (showing me the bottleneck wasn't quite what I thought it was).
-Awesome new additions to T-SQL. Ranking functions, Common Table Expressions, and more.. (many of them were there in 2005, but I only had 2005 deployed as my test SQL Server).
-The ranking functions allowed me to do with a single view (of about 30 lines) something I had to write in 200 line PowerShell script. To be fair, PowerShell was also doing some presentation formatting that I'm doing in a report now, but still..

  • New Favorite Tool - Multi Function [RICH]
- I recieves a Swiss+tech multi tool that closes around a small led light. I like this tool because ti does to things for me. It gives me a standard and a phillips screw driver, pliers and a light to do simple testing of fiber and sine the pliers detatch from the light I don't have to drag my keys around while I try to use t.

  • Perfmon Counter - Memory\Available MBytes? [STEVE]
-The amount of physical memory available for running processes. If this value goes below 5% of the total memory for the machine, you will need to add more RAM to avoid paging.
-
  • Perfmon - Top 10 Counters [KEITH]
-Nice basic intro article about the ten most important perfmon counters to use and how to intrepret the results.
-It focuses on getting that overall health status of the system and possible identifying the areas to then pursue in depth.
  • Hub, Switch, Smart Switch, Fully Managed L2 - L3 Switches [RICH]
- On Monday, I was reminded why I have moved to purchasing nothing less than smart switches.
- I was able to diagnosis a loopback issue at a site without user intervention
- But the funny thing is every now again I still hear the term hub. Is there any possible reason to purchase a hub? The only term I can think of with a Hub is BROADCAST.
- An unmanaged switch for a small work group okay I can buy that but, for me no more unmanaged switches in my Main Server / Network room.
- I guess in my environments I have to manage them increasingly more remotely. This gives me the tools I need
- When will I go strictly gigabit? not sure for the most part, point of sale devices still don't need gigabit just 100MB full duplex. But I do tend to use Gigabit more in office areas and such.
- I tend to us Netgear so for a quick comparison, and unmanged prosafe 24 Port switch cost ~$100.00 a smart enabled switch 24 ports with 2 gigabit costs ~$180.00 so for $80.oo I get the 2 gigabit ports for linking between switches and the ability to manage the switch for easier trouble shooting and manageability

-Been spending most of my free time trying to get BT4? to load on my SD card on EeePC?.
-Since BT2?, they do not include an install to HD option. There is a manual way, but it keeps failing on the copy no matter what source media I try to copy it from.
-Through researching, I found the uNetBootin utility for both Windows and Linux for creating Bootable Live USB drives. You select the distro you want to load and it even has a feature to download the ISO for the OS for you to use on the install.

-There is also a test site at cahoots.concentratedtech.com

  • Modifying an executable [KEITH]
-I have a program that was written by my predecessor. It works well, except for one problem; it has the NetBIOS? name of a server in a UNC embedded in the app.
-When I moved the app's DB to a new server, it worked fine until I completely shut down the old server. Then, when it couldn't resolve the name in the UNC, it locked up on start.
-I added a static DNS entry to the new server so it can resolve the name, but the share name is different as well.
-I no longer have the development environment available to make changes and compile a new release, so I had to come up with alternative ideas.
-I found a basic Hex editor, XVI32? and was able to find the strings. I am still in the process of editing the strings and testing and will let you know the outcome.
