[Rich] and I'm Rich Niemeier.

[Steve] and I'm Steve Murawski and this is Episode 91 streaming live on Ustream.tv on Wednesday March 11th, 2009. Today's show is sponsored by Quest Software; Helping you rule your domain. We are also sponsored by Sapien Technologies; the makers of PrimalScript?.

Chit-Chat - What's going on with you?

[Steve]

  • Been talking PowerShell all week.. I was at Brainstorm 10 on Monday, talking to sysadmins, and on Tuesday, I spoke to our local .NET User Group, which is primarily a developer oriented crowd. It's the first time I gave a developer version of my PowerShell talk and I think I surprised some people with the focus. I did get some good comments back though.

  • Symantec Goes Nuts[KEITH]
-I've been trying to renew my Symantec licensing for BackupExec? 12 for over two months now.
-They've doubled in price across the board on their licensing costs for agents. It's a significant increase (Several thousand $$)
-I'm going to look at ArcServe?, but any other ideas.

  • Perfmon Counter - Memory\Free System Page Table Entries[STEVE]
-This counter measures the number of Page Table Entries that are not in currently in use.
-When this number dips below 5,000, there might be a memory leak in an application.
-

  • Google your logs[KEITH]
-Innovative idea on log aggregation and management.
-I've just started playing with it. I am going to try it without the agent at first to see how it does.
-One downside, it makes it hard for trends/problems to pop up in review. You have to look for specific entries.
  • Personal Smart Devices in the SMB or Enterprise[STEVE]
-This just keeps coming up. I've had a few people in my workplace who have purchased smart phones and would like to use it to receive their work email.
-A friend of mine, Adam, also brought this up as a suggestion. In his environment, he has a mobile device that his IT department "barely" let's him sync.
-I've got mixed feelings on the topic. I don't want to be the "NO" admin, and I want to allow my users the greatest access to technology that helps them in their work, but I also have security considerations. Currently, mobile devices that I manage have to VPN back to my network (made easier by the Netmotion client), and I have the ability to wipe mobile devices remotely. Would your users allow you to have the right to wipe their device (to protect against data loss)?
-I think the next part of this evolution is going to be Netbooks.. as those inexpensive laptops become more common, how many people might want to use them to VPN back to their corporate network?

  • What's your servers name?[KEITH]
-A good naming convention sets the stage for scaling and communication.
-Funny things can happen either way. It reminds me of a consultant I worked with that named NetWare? volumes after women in the office. Mount command...that's all I'm saying.
-I like the hierarchical conventions since they provide the most scalability and make uniformity easy for communications in an organization.
  • Continuing education[STEVE]
-What are you doing to continue your skills development?
-Send an email to contest@mindofroot.com with what you are doing to improve your skills and be entered in a drawing for a book from Sapien Press.

[KEITH/RICH - do you want to mix it up a bit and make this our only book contest for March and just give four books to random entries? Just an idea]

Listener Feedback

From listener....Brian

I think it was Keith that talked about Orca MSI editor a while back. I am having issues with a piece of software (MSI) that I need to remove one of the prerequisites in the MSI. Can you point me back to that show or article?

[KEITH]We talked about Orca on two shows; Episode 55 and Episode 73. See the show notes for links:

Episode 55

Episode 73

Also, Steve emailed me recently with a another app being called Orca’s replacement. It’s called InstEdit? and you can check it out at http://www.instedit.com/

I haven’t tried InstEdit? yet, so if you do, drop me a note on your thoughts.
