  • I mentioned I would be doing a review of SolarWinds? network tool suite a couple shows ago. Unfortunately, things didn't work out. I missed a call and a day later they released. I don't know how I was supposed to do the review but anyway...I downloaded the trial and cannot say I was all that impressed. I can't honestly say I did a full review, but basically, no integration like I mentioned I had hoped for for the legacy tools. You can launch the tools, but it doesn't even pass the host name/IP or anything like that. Not true integration.

  • Outlook 2003 auto-complete feature [RICH]
- Had an instance of an end user depending on outlooks auto-complete function for an address book.
- I found this utility to export the information
- I think i may use this before transferring peoples profiles. I will still move the NK2? file as necessary

[KEITH]Don't forget to teach the user how to edit these entries as well. I had a co-worker send me something to my personal address to test something once. For the next week, she sent all work correspondence to that address since auto-complete came up with that one first.

-We're pulling some new circuits into the data center in preparation for load balancing and eventually installing a backup generator.
-I spent last Thursday night staying late to move everything over to the new circuits.
-Unfortunately, when I moved everything to the two new circuits, I started popping breakers. I tried distributing the load more evenly and staggering boot cycles on servers to reduce load, but no matter what, I popped the breakers. So, I moved back to the old circuits.
-Update: Today I was in at 6:30am meeting with the electrician moving circuits. I had to drop a couple production servers (overloaded and bad UPS's that I'm due to replace) during working hours, but it's all moved now.
-Found one circuit drawing 22 amps on a 20 amp breaker. It tripped the new breaker, but not the old one. Ideal load is around 15-16 amps. Keep in mind the fluctuation of power draw during boot cycle, supplementary fans, etc.

- I read that the mouse tracking was delayed, I want to verify it is not delayed. It never synchs up correctly
- I called IOGear? to discuss and they pretty much told me they thought the appliance worked as designed.
- this basically means that they can not and are not concerned with correcting the synchronization of the local mouse with the remote.
- IOGear? like your price point but don't feel i was properly informed on the short comings of your product.
- No hard feels I guess this is a case of you get what you pay for.

  • SQL Replication Problem [KEITH]
-Repl between customer billing and public website. Worked fine until last Friday. In for the agents, saw message 'Agent is suspect. No response in 10 minutes'.

Jing (http://www.jingproject.com/) Techsmith produce a fairly good product called Camtasia Studio for creating training/presentation material for around $300. Used by popular CBT training companies such as CBT Nuggets. If you just want a simple way of creating a flash movie of up to 5 minutes for free they offer jing which creates a fairly polished looking screencast. Quick and easy way to do a quick demo to end users and present via a web interface.

FastStone? Image Capture (http://www.faststone.org/FSCaptureDetail.htm) There are a multitude of screen capture utilities out there although this is the only one that I have found which will scroll down the page and capture a screen image that goes off the screen. No install required and is just an exe file for their portable version with an editor encorporated to edit the image before saving it. Used to be free but is now $20 although the last freeware version (5.3) still suits my needs and is still available here if you want to take a look (http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/page4.html#FastStone%20Capture). Ideal for documentation etc.

Bit of fun Gather Wii remotes are starting get used for all kinds of things lately. This app allows you to use your wii remote with MS powerpoint for remote zoom and page turning etc. Just need to find a compatible bluetooth device for your PC. (http://www.indyproject.org/WiiKey/index.EN.aspx). Like to see who would have be prepared to use on in a presentation though without being laughted at!! I would have problems getting it out of the house.
