-not sure of the real value of this type of graphics format, but I can tell you in most instances I people use it out of convience

  • Copying SQL Server Tables to access [KEITH]
-I never realized how easy this was to do. We have a consultant looking at some Access DB's and they have linked tables to SQL.
-Since he is not on-site, he wanted to see interaction between entities and no ODBC connection was available. You can simply copy the table down (structure, data, or both) to Access.
-I knew it was possible, just never realized how easy it was.

-co-worker called and was having an issue with a PC
-The PC would logout - log off immediately after you logged in
-safe mode - no, scan using adware utilities - found some but was not the fix
-He was explaining the issue and I googled it
-Luck of the draw , I found a discuss about a similiar problem
-The co-worker was embarassed a little
-Well he is more proficient than I am at many things, but googling I am a master
-I think the biggest advice I have is, think of different ways to describe the same problem

  • Unable to open attachments from Outlook 2003 [KEITH]
-User was opening attachments, suddenly couldn't
-Went back to previous attachments she could open a few minutes ago, now unable to do so.
-All had same file name, so I thought it was a conflict related to that.
-Turns out the files were never being removed from temp dir (OLK1?) and kept piling up. It was up to FILENAME (99).DOC. I'm assuming the roll-over to three digits was the culprit.

  • UBCD boot problem with new PC's [KEITH]
-Unable to see hard drive on PC to do imaging.
-Probably didn't have the SATA driver on the boot CD, but was able to access another way
-AHCI emulation was set on new PC. Change to IDE mode and was able to boot.

  • Swapping PC's using a hard drive image [KEITH]
-Have you done this successfully? In the past it was a lot easier to dissimilar hardware, but now that WGA is in the picture, not so much.
-Since the user has a lot of custom software, etc I opted to give it a try and received a 'This copy of windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can log on...'
-I booted from an XP CD and performed a repair and entered the key and it appears to be working, but I need to test it more.
-Would it have been better to sysprep it before imaging? Unfortunately, this is a bit disruptive to the user as I need to finish the mini-install for her to be able to keep using the PC.

You may have already heard of these but here goes anyway, topic for this week is collarboration/support tools.

TeamViewer? (www.teamviewer.com) Remote desktop client which works through NAT and firewalls and is free for non-commercial use. Based on small app to install but does not involve installing anything and commercial version has a web based version which is based on flash. Seems primarily focused on remote support with chat and file transfer included. Involves end user running app every time they require you to connect to them. Passing of their unique UserID? and session key is needed likely over the phone in order for you to remote control their desktop. Seems reasonably functional and priced including one off life time costs for commercial versions.

DimDim? (www.dimdim.com) Have not had a chance to look at this too much but seems to be getting a lot of press recently. All based on flash and free for a meeting of up to 20 participants. Purely based on flash with no local install or DimDim? accounts needed by end users (just a meeting request which can be sent by dimdim servers or your own e-mail). Can be used commercially and price for more participants still looks attractive. Features include collaboration via whiteboard, uploading of PDFs? or PowerPoint? presentations. You can even share your desktop via small app to install. There is also a open source version to install on your own site although I would imagine this has limited features when compared to the full blown app. Anyway, one to potentially look at to save money regarding on-line meetings.

[KEITH]I think Winston Wolfe mentioned TeamViewer? on a recent show and it looks like a good one to check out. I've known DimDim? for a while and have wanted to get a server up and start tinkering, but have never put it on the priority list. Rich can tell you about our experiences in testing some online meeting/collaboration spaces from years ago.
